Hog Riders Overpowered

I've been playing clash of clans for over a year now and love the game. I'm level 89 and have a great base. Almost maxed th9. But what bugs me and makes me want to stop playing, are hog rider. They should not be able to crush through my base in under a minute. This matter is very frustrating. I spend so much time and some money on upgrading my base for it to be completely destroyed by an over powered troop. I think something should be done. I hope you take my message into consideration.

Hi Riley,

i think higs are not OP. With the right base design they are very easy to stop. Have a look at my base.

Putting 2 giant bombs next to each other is a big help. Also it helps to have a ring in which no defenses are placed.

I'm not sure about your Th.. But i used this very same layout when i was th9 against hogs. And even at 8 this layout works.

Note : usually input the teslas in the outer ring..

Also fear not cause Th9's have a fighting chance against them too, just like the game shoukd be. Build an anti hog layout and fill your very hard to lure CC with maxed minions, and hay presto your get some defensive wins against hogs.

If you want to find a good layout to beat them there are a few thread in here about them.

It amazes me that people still want hogs to be nerfed again? Really?!!

Base design is key, quit demanding another nerf to them.

I think hog riders are great working to master but then after you hit a brick wall at 2500 trophies you hit the Great Wall of china! 2800 Trophies!

Hogs have been nerfed 3 times if they are still overpowered to you then to be quite honest you are aweful at this game

your a town hall 9 and losing? change your defence to beat them town hall 9 can own hogs with right def

something was actually done about it not once but TWICE. Not only they decreased their hit points but also created a new mode for inferno towers. What do you guys want? make them obsolete?! like the witches... I don't get it. You want to always win on defense? instead of being happy and start acquiring some skills to use them you start nagging...

Yeah off topic but I can't help to mention how much I think SC messed up with the inferno towers, I just barely got a 50% to a premie Th7 (yes he would be best called a premature Th7) with 2 of them and I wasn't using hogs:(

Th9 don't have IT's so its us poor guys getting spanked, well not spanked exactly I win defences to all but the best hoggers and I'm happy about that balance, although most hoggers are getting smarter nowadays and anti hog bases will have to evolve with them.

If it makes u feel any better, it takes 2 minutes for me to flatten a maxed TH9 with hogs.

Witches are not obsolete, people at high levels use them all of the time. They are great for killing maxed heroes once your lure them outside of the base. And yes, hogs are still overpowered.

1. make ur cc troops unlureable
2. get some wizs or minions in ur cc
3. redesign ur base
*i was a th9 previously and i didnt had much troubles with hogs

if it doesnt work, then jus quit the game, leave ur pumps outside too :) i jus cant believe there are still people out there who are whining about hogs being overpowered....

Putting 2 giant bombs next to each other wouldn't kill hog except you have lvl 4 giant bomb, you need 2 giant bomb near wizard tower & inferno, so hog can't be heal when activate bomb
I put 2 giant bomb in front of wiz tower & inferno, instant kill for hog
If you put 2 giant bomb out of wiz & inferno, it's useless, because easily healed till max

Best way I find atm for stopping hogs is traps at th9. Spring traps and leveled giant bombs do the trick. If I go for a hog base I normally get rolled by most other compositions which I don't think is worth with me farming at 1700's.

Its easy to beat up on TH9 bases with Giants/Archer/Barbs/WB's with Rage, too... So, I guess we should nerf all those troops too and make the Rage Spell no work against X-Bows.... Lol

I had that army hit my base on my last push. He got a two star on me. Compared to tons of full on hog fails.

Huh, scapula?

Anyway OP, I'm a TH9 as well, currently in C1 and I have little or no problems with hogs. Base layout and trap placement is really important, many good advice flying around here already. Granted, a good hogger will probably be able to break your base even if it's anti-hog, but you will have a good chance to defeat the regular facerollers. Hogs don't need further balancing, look up some anti-hog layouts and try one yourself!

Defending against Hogs depend to a very large extent on the traps, especially two lvl 3 giant bombs can toast a set of hogs.
Having said that i still feel Hogs are OP, because :-

- Winning against hogs (With heal spell) is dependent on base and mainly on traps, NOT much on maxed defenses
- Every night i get hogged because the first attack i win, and the guy has already triggered most traps, The first guy takes 1/2 storage and doesnt give a shield, then my base is a cake walk for hogs. Overall i lose about 500k gold every night. If i have more than 3-4 mil in storages.


The only solution here is to give TH9 one inferno atleast to have a chance to win without traps.

OR Revenge back with Hogs again and take the loot back :cool:

One troop that is game changer is HOGS
One defense that is game changer is Inferno Tower

Hogs put other troops to shame, similar to ITs putting a shame on other defenses

Forget about buying Builder huts, Just buy gems to get IT and Max Hogs. I guess that is good enuf to have fun. Game over in 1 month.

But this is trading one problem for another. Th9 already has a solid defense against a Th8 player. Adding that would unbalance the differences there



However, you complain is specific and I can agree with it. Since I leave my TH exposed a 30% hog will still nets me a shield

Agree completely bro , my townhall is lvl 9 almost maxed and i win even at masters with my anti hog base . . but they can still also 3 star // but it isnt impossible to defend well mate

Many people attack with hogs who have no clue what they are doing. A person skilled in their use would destroy your town hall 9 base every single time.

I think of hogs as a high risk/high reward troop. Yes a great player can mop the floor with them, but really how many of those are their? Their should be some troops that reward skill over gems and big price tags (that's purely an opinion). If they were really that out of control they'd be all over in the Champion league were players can't afford to leave themselves wide open to GoWiWi and level 40 heros by setting their infernos to disco


but I also want to have that quick training unit that can hold its own when I get to place where I can avoid the DE

I reeeeeaallllly bet a lot that when you upgrade to TH10 you will love using them. Watch how they trawl your base, learn, adapt, move up and repeat. It's fun!

Amen but seriously hogs are just one type of troop the troops you use in combination make a big difference whether it be wizards minions barbs or archer very huge difference

IMO they are OP. Nerf'em or give us a new defence structure that help us spank the bacon. A freeze tower that make them stop for a while could be a solution, and it should be given to TH8.

All they have to do is slow them down or increase their housing space.

Any ok hog player can easily 3 star any th9 village. The only way to stop them is with infernos, thats the way the game is now, so OP has a point actually

Try making anti hog base mate good luck...come to think of it there is a very very nice th9 layout around here somewhere... It makes me anxious to hit th9 just looking at the def logs n vids

Completely agree. It feels like SC are excluding TH9s because they know that pretty much all TH9 players don't gem.

This has been going on for a long time, and it should be stopped. Okay, so maybe nurffing isnt the right solution - balance is what we need. It was given to TH10 with the multi-inferno. All we need now, is a balance for TH9.

People shouldnt have to fear, or create a curtain base to atempt to overcome one type of troop -that's not why a lot of people play this game.

Its a a stragergy game - not 'hold you finger down for 5seconds and watch your single type of troop destroy a whole, year-old base.

Agree 100%. People are too, lazy to put in the work required to research a proper base and expect the game to just play itself. Then, when it won't, they complain and want a nerf. Hogs are good where they are. Witches need to be put back where they were, sc needs to quit messing this game up by acquiescing to narcissistic players and focus on true game play improvements. IT changes are good balance between hog and golem defense.

TH10 player with TH9 max buildings.

HEY hogs are the only way to farm th10 keep your damn dirty hands off them.

Exactly, when you have to make a base to prevent a single troop from getting 100% on you every single time, there is a problem. Spamming 35+ hogs from the same spot and getting easy 100% victories is absurd.

Not entirely true. There are such things as traps, bombs and Base designs that counter hogs. Hogs are horrible in spaced out defenses, because even though they are quick, they can be easy split up or spend time running towards defense building enough that they can take enough damage to die in the process. And because defense buildings are spaced out, heal spells become less effective. A good example are Long wall base designs like this:

Besides, Hogs despite looking simple to use, does actually take skill to actually perform a good Hog attack on a well upgraded base. Mass hog armies are a high risk troop, if by chance your hog army dies off too quickly, it's almost a 100% defeat. And even if you were to make out with 1-5 hogs at the end, without many troops left for cleanup, you can't get the 3star / 100% resource grab due to time running out.

I can easily three star any th9 base with hogs with 3 healing spells, and we get 5 spells to use

Dont think there is any th9 that cant be beaten by hogs just because you get attacked by unskilled players

Not saying that my base can't be beaten, but I've won against Hog players that clearly know what they are doing. It's the matter of defenses, CC troops, bombs and a combination of things done to counter an effective Hog attack.

To be saying that with hogs, you can beat any TH9 base is arrogant. I'm an excellent Hog user, and even then I don't say silly things like that. There are too many variables that can cause any army to fail a raid.

You won against bad hog players, its very easy to lure your cc troops and very easy to reach the core of your village. Its not hard to see the mistakes they made when you watch the replay

You probably got them by surprise with those 2 giant bombs didnt u.. That can happen but its the attackers fault right

Nothing in this game is certain... Ill hold my hands up and say ive come unstuck using hogs and id say im pretty good with em,a maxed th9 set up right will cause you probs with hogs end of :cool:

Every hog thread is the same discussion, th9 saying there are good layouts against hogs and th10 saying any th9 village can be beaten by hogs

My point is: op has a point, they nerfed hogs vs th10 but its still the same vs th9

I consider myself pretty skilled at using hogs.... or at least above average and it takes me close to the full 3 minutes to 3 star a decent TH9, often I run out of time. If you are getting flattened in 1 minute your base must be horrible and your cc empty of to the side. Against a decent base it takes about a minute sometimes more to just lure and kill the cc, BK and AQ

Nothing more can be done with hogs unless they completely change the troop.

They are a very difficult troop to balance due to the way they attack. There is very little room for middle ground in hog attacks they either fail miserably and people say they are ♥♥♥♥ or they get through the defenses and go on for the 3 star win causing people to say they are overpowered.

But what can SC really do?

As they are a ground troops that jumps walls they can’t really be used as a part of any other army. It is not usually a good idea to support ground troops with air troops and if you use them with ground troops the rest will get stuck on walls while the hogs go off by themselves.
This means the only way they can really be used is as mass hogs.

Any more nerfs and they won’t be able to get through defenses and therefore go back to being more useless than a Valkyrie.

Those saying nerf them… How can it be done without making the troop completely useless?

Cut them some slack, they're going through a tough time. Fortunately there's still plenty of TH1-9 to have fun with! :)

Just to add to this thread. For those of you that think Hogs are overpowered.

1. Hogs have been nerfed several times already, it's the the point where it's getting ridiculous. 2 HP reductions, and 2 updates that directly reduced their effectiveness (bombs & traps, Infernos Anti-heal).
2. You can design a base to counter hogs. If you're consistently being smashed by hogs 100% by even novice users, there's something wrong with the design of your base. It's the same with any troop though, you need to counter it! ie; Balloons & Minions, Giant & healer = Well placed Air Defense with Air bombs and Air Seeking Bombs

Hog Riders suck. They barely get 20% on my base. They may be overpowered for TH9 and below, however.

A problem with making an anti hog base is that it rarely works against much other things. So you're protecting against one thing and then having your base a lot weaker to others. If you're saying that the hog villages work great against others too then how come before the hog update almost no-one had a base that looked anti-hog. Th10 with multi infernos take them down easily but for th9 its make a base a lot weaker to any other strategy and still sometimes lose badly or get 100%. In an old clan the leader (hogs in same state) would beat th9s around crystal 1, some maxed and would be posting replays of him getting 100% every half hour (or close). Th10 can easily prey on th9 with hogs and th9 cant do the same back.

On how to nerf them before they have hogs the ability to target defences they buffed them a lot. Why not take away those buffs? Or they could give th8 (they have no new defence and are very vulnerable to lv6 troops) a way to beat hogs like a very bulky defence or a something that eliminates a certain kind of spell (or any other idea).

I have every TH9 defensive building upgraded. I'm upgrading some bombs and working on more level 9 walls.

I'm running one of the spike and moat bases designed to stop hogs with my TH inside hanging around in C1/C2. The moat is filled with loot and the center compartment is Xbows, mortars, CC, TH. With every maxed TH9 defense online and my CC (15 L5 minions), BK (10), AQ (13) I'm holding up okish. 8 out of my last 10 defenses were hogs despite my base being built to be annoying for them. If they don't pull the CC/heroes, I do ok. If they do they almost always wipe pretty much all the defenses around the edge of my base out. A lot of it at that point comes down to what sort of cleanup troops they brought, how much they used pulling/killing CC & heroes, and what level of heroes they drop (if any).

I've lost a ton of Elixir but only 3 Gold stores in those 8 attacks. 2 were from one attack where I was 80%ed the hogs actually got my entire outer defenses and jumped to the core and took out an xbow. This left one side exposed and the Heroes were 15+.

The hogs still feel a bit too strong against TH9 and I'm assuming far, far worse below. My Giant Bombs were level 1 and I'm upgrading them. I have no doubt the double giant eliminates the threat but at a decent cost especially if they drop in two places and take out all 4 plus other traps.

Wrong, why do a lot of players make base designs with well protected Air Defence, Mortars and Wizard Towers? So Giant Healer, Balloonions, Mass Drag and Barch don't own your base, same applies to Hogs, we make Anti Hog bases for this reason

Thing is that all those attacks you listed are more than 1 style of attack. Anti hog bases dont work great against the others you listed and if we're willing to be weaker to one to be able to resist some hog attacks....

Um. A base can be designed to resist hogs and other troops as well. My base has numerous strategies against a number of troops, including hogs.

That's easily remedied with the hogs. just have them going in a circle with your defense positions, and look for ideas. I know people have posted some good suggestions in this thread.

Does BBKing & Queens squares count as defence? I saw on the base example they were in the middle layers so I guess not but want that confirmed.

The reason people think Hogs are OP is because of their unique AI, the reason Anti Hog bases are made is because conventional bases wont work against Hogs due to their AI, it has nothing to do with them being OP, and besides there are ways to counter both Hogs and Giant Healer, Mass Drag, Balloonions etc.

It makes the base weaker to other troops. The amount of hog bases that can be taken out by giants and heal spell (not th10) is ridiculous. It's hard to make a base that is good against hogs while retaining the ability to be giants/balloonian or any other attack strategy. If they are good at taking on others why were those bases non-existent before hogs targeted defences?

Actually, Giant-Healer, Hogs, and Balloon-Minions are very similar in strategy. AS those armies contain main troops that target defense buildings first, if you employ an anti-hog strategy, it works for those troops as well.

The only concern is the heavier troops like Drag, GoWiPe, GoWiWi. Which you need plenty of splash damage (mortars, xbows, wiz towers and AD in well protected areas).

But giants dont skip walls. Also the air defence may be positioned in a different place as theyre irrelevent for hogs and yet needed for balloons.
Just asking but dont you need a ring of defences round the outside and the troops to attack that ring. But if you need to protect everything except cannons and archer towers then how is that ring complete. I guess we're not going to agree but from my experience in attacking and defending most hog bases are weaker to other strategies. If you don't have an anti hog base or arent th10 well then 100% almost all the time.

That makes Giants weaker against walled defenses even though anti-hog. So they rely on Wallbreakers. However, they are still attracted to the ring, and still try to beat down walls to the next defense.

Well not all Anti-hog bases are strong, I'll give you that. I actually created my own from adopting a few other designs which where good decent designs but lacking in a few areas.

Anyway, I used my base right up to Master II and even a few TH10 raiders using full Golem Level 5 armies + level 20 heroe along with Balloons couldn't fully 3 star me. A TH9 would be thankful not to be 100% up there, so it's not a fail at all (it's a win!). Granted not everyone will benefit from the design as my walls are pretty strong.

I understand a TH8 can't resist a good hog attack but not all are good. I improvised a new bas design yesterday, could that work against "no pro hoggers" and normal armies with giants and whatever? Would you advice me to concentrate traps/bombs to 1-2 places instead to kill the hogs instant before they get healed?

They have been nerfed quite a lot. Still, I don't like the way a single troop can pack such a punch. There should be more uncertainty, say an increase in risk when using only hogs.

Hogs are not OP anymore, I have a TH 9 and was winning defenses in master against maxed hog armies, very easy to defend against with the right base! Very nice design. The only thing is the Archer tower and Wiz tower on the sides can be spaced out a bit so the lower cannons can move more into the front of the TH. I assume there is a few Teslas there as well but it's better to space it out so the hogs have more time inbetween hopping from the Archer tower to the Wizard tower (2 block space preferred)

Thanks, yes, I should change that a bit! I've had four attacks on it today, lowest 23% and highest 39, that feels ok since all my Teslas and one arch T are on upgrade.

Oh and reminder, Teslas when upgrading are invisible to Hogs, so keep that in mind when designing the outer ring.

Too many whiners complaint about this. They've been nerfed alot recently and if I can stop them with a 50% maxed town hall 8, it should be easy for you.

Never forget to lure CC troop & Hero. And you have to know, Clan Castle has range 12 tile to east-west-north-south
It's important in making the decission to lure cc troop

How to attack that base:
1. RED ARROW. Drop3-4 hog to destroy air def, and in the same time lure cc & activate AQ
2. Drop only 1 barba or any other troop to activate BK
3. Bring AQ,BK,and CC troop to brown square, and kill them
4. PINK ARROW. Deploy 4-5 hog to destroy Archer tower
5. BLUE ARROW. Drop all of your hogs here, and after destroy Wiz tower & Canon tower, your hogs will go straight to center without going arround
6. Drop your hero & rest of your troop on blue arrow after hogs destroy go to center.

Lols. Another Hog hater. Use the hogs yourself, on TH10 and you will know they are not OP. After 3 nerfs they stand pretty much no chance against TH10 without Freeze.
Fact 1: Anti-hog base help alot, traps and CC are the key here, being a max TH9 dont matter much with 4-5 heals in play.
Fact 2: Without Infernos, skilled hoggers CAN and WILL destroy you regardless. Just like how high lv THs destroy lower THs just as easily. You dont call that OP unless nothing stops them. If you are a TH8, I WILL destroy you with Balloonians, and that doesnt make them OP in any way past TH9.

Th 9 anti hog basest only work about 50% of the time th 9 deff gets the shaft in the ballence of things but nerfing hogs again would make them ussless for a th 10 player to use anti hog bases do work but about half the time they dont to 3 heals and a rage spell with hogs can easy defeat a anti hog base or lose to it depending on the user hogs look like the take no skill and the dont on non maxed th 9 and below but maxed th 9 and up they do take skill to use

But you shouldn't have to build one specific base to overcome one type of troop... Thats pointless. I've used hog bases, and I've still been tree stared.

maybe not nurffing, but SC needs to at least give us balance.

I've never been 2-3 starred by hogs when i was maxed TH9 at around 2800-2900 trophies, i think you should learn how to play this game.
