It's too bad they don't offer a level 1 drill to th7 and let th8 upgrade their drill to level 6. Once you get to th9 and upgrade your drills, then there really is little reason to lightning dark elixer, but before that it's about your only option.

I don't now that I got my barb king. I raid unprotected collectors instead. Got 600 from a TH10 this way. But generally I try not to zap. But I understand why you would do it because it is so hard to get DE at TH7. Geting closer to my barb king lvl 2. Only 9000 more!

Ok I admit it! I zapped for BK at th 7 then got tired if DE 'farming' and spent $3 to buy the rest of the DE needed
When I used to carry lightning spells more often I'd for sure drop them on a DE storage if the guy had his TH outside. I kept on being revenged for more than I zapped so I stopped. In fact, I just stopped attacking TH9's in general, even to be nice and give a free shield. All I get in return is 2k De, 270k Gold, and 270k Elixir gone from my storages with no chance to defend.
Honestly though, you can get twice the DE with Rage than you can with Lightning, it just requires more skill than rolling your face on your iPad.
I always carry lightning spells just in case......

I'm a TH10, and another TH10 zapped my DE with 5 lvl 6 lightning spells. His defenses are maxed, and his heroic heist was almost 3 million, if not 3 million by now. I got a bit irritated, knowing I can't do much damage to his base, but apparently, he is a much better DE farmer than me, so I can respect that.

TBH if you are getting zapped that means you are chilling too low of a cup level. Dont say "You're not playing the game right if you zap DE." Well guess what, youre not playing the game right with your maxed out th10 sitting at 1500 trophies. Even if you're th 7 you have 220 troops space at your disposal!! You have level 4 rage and heal AND LEVEL 2 dragons/healers. Pretty strong troops that can take some weak premies for 800-1200 DE or bases with semi exposed DE.

Lightning spells is a standard weapon to inflict damage to enemy base in the game, SC specifically designed it this way.
Zapping DE is exactly how SC designed the spell to do. When and where to use it is individual decision. Experience has nothing to do with it.
My TH9 base got attacked by mass hogs by a TH10 with almost max base sporting two disco IT.
EXPERIENCE told me revenge is futile with my army. But he has a full DE storage! What did I do in revenge? I zapped the DE with 4 lightning, went for the DE drills, emptied its CC and killed its high level BK and AQ without giving him a shield.

Not true. Say you just raided but didn't use any spells and you had all lightning spells and you only needed a few hundred de for a hero upgrade would you zap and upgrade hero or log off and take the chance of losing 1k+? Been farming for dark at 2200 cups with a hybrid layout and happy to say that there are no zappers here. I think 2200 is just too high for the noobs to stay at. As long as you don't present them with an easy TH to snip they won't zap you.
Problem solved it would seem, next problem how to stop pro hoggers as a Th9?
