not all mysteryboxes. Some can be found without using diamonds. I found about in the time that im playing 1,5 week now, about 3 mysteryboxes with 5 diamonds in it. Some mysteryboxes gave me shovels or others things.

Yes, some mystery boxes are unlocked and don't need diamonds. See the tips for finding more toolboxes here:

Most will still be locked, but if you find more, you'll find more that are open, too.

They only cost diamonds if you want to open a locked box. Randomly, you will find ones that open free and some of those have 5 diamonds in them - others have coins, mine tools or expansion items. Keep trying. Just don't use your diamonds to open a locked one.
