A Philisophical Boat Question

So I'm a measly level 25 but have been playing for a while but taking it slow... Almost all my neighbors and higher levels and have more experience than me so they are very helpful constantly in filling those boat orders i just cant get! Sometimes though I have a boat order I can fill and will fill if time gets low. BUT many people enjoy donating and helping so I'm slightly conflicted...

am i being a jerk and requesting help when not absolutley necessary? Or am I being a good neighbor by giving others the chance to help out and raise their score?

I was gonna post a question about boats too. I fill boats when I have extra stock in my barn like 5 or more. I don't fill boats for the points I just do it to help. My question was do you help with a boat when the person doesn't have the machine making what they are asking for? I never ask for help unless I am making the product, if they can fill it before mine gets done thats great if not I will make it myself.

I'm level 60+ish. I don't notice if people I help have machines going or not. I am not sure looking at them is very accurate. I like to fill whatever I can-however I still do not have the barn capacity for dozens of cream, etc.

Firstly. Looking at the persons farm is not accurate at all. While working with the boat helpers last fall I noticed that every time I looked at a farm the crops looked the same. The wheat never seemed to grow. So you could look at a farm and notice the machines whirring away for ever or not working at all even though they are. It is really only accurate if the person is logged on while you are looking.

Second. If you want to fill the crates fill them. If you want to flag them flag them. There is no etiquette attached to it. I have long ago reached my 15,000 boat points for the Boat hunter achievement and my first farm is high enough that there is no reason to level up. I like to collect the vouchers though so I will open the boat and start filling it. But I will also flag crates for others to fill for a variety of reasons even if I have the stuff to fill it myself. If no one wants to fill it, I fill it myself after a while. I'll flag crates to let my kid get the boat points

So no you are not a jerk by flagging crates for others to fill. Nothing is making them fill them, so they will only fill them if they want the points, XP, cash or if they just like helping others.

Now there is one thing that I should bring up. While I don't think it is bad to flag a crate for help so you don't use the last of your stock, it is considered bad form to ALWAYS flag all three cream or sugar or fish crates without attempting to fill at least one of them your self. To do it now and then is OK. But by doing it all the time or most of the time,makes it look like you want others to always do the hard stuff. And since these crates are hard enough for your neighbors to fill, you deprive them of helping out if you always flag the hard ones. Not all people think this way, but keep in mind some do,so don't count on these crates getting filled.

I have flagged cream or sugar crates on occasion and my neighbors always fill them, BUT I will usually fill all three crates for my neighbors even if it uses my last cherry jelly. I'll even fill a crate at the start and come back ten hours later and fill the last two after my stock is done. I think my neighbors remember that and do what they can to help me.

And that's what my friends do for me. I have no idea what any of them thinks if they see 3 butter crates open at my shop. It's their choice to fill or not to fill. And when I come back to my boat and see three different peeps have generously filled one butter crate each... I smile :)

Not three of one item Rammie, but three of the hard ones (cream , sugar, fish) and not once in a while , but ALL the time. I had a few neighbors who did just that. I play pretty much all the time and these few folks would flag the cream crates and then sometimes never fill any of the other crates. I understand opening boats you can't fill so others can get some points, but why flag just cream. And then sometimes they would fill the other crates but never full their own cream crates. It was like they never made cream. And then the real weird thing is that no one else would fill the cream crates either. So it's not like they got any success with this strategy. After a while it became obvious that we weren't able to help each other so I un friended them. That's what I was trying to say. Maybe they just didn't have enough friends.

I usually flag one crate of each thing, some of my lower level friends like to help with the things they can produce. I'm always grateful if someone fills a tricky crate and NEVER feel let down if no-one can help and the boat goes away partly empty.

but I try to fill some crates first before I flag the others.

I always cast off sugar, dairy, fish and lobster boats because I'm always too short of these things to lose the stock on a boat. I figure if I'm loathe to do it then I don't ask my neighbours to lose theirs either. For any other crates, I always like to fill at least one rather than ask for all three of one type unless I've absolutely run out due to consecutive boats asking for the same thing. Additionally, I never even start a boat if I know I can't finish it alone within the time it's docked, just in case my neighbours don't help out.

When it comes to filling crates for neighbours, I'm a serial offender and regularly go short of stuff to help out. I even put stuff into production then go back and fill the crate if it's still there when the goods are ready. With such a large neighbour network I've had to become a little picky about who to help because it's just not possible to help everyone all the time, so I've taken to only helping those who help themselves. I judge this by whether they've started to fill crates themselves. If there are no crates done then I pass by and go back later to check progress.

That's my way of doing it, for what it's worth.

Anyway, to return to Ranger's original question, philosophically you need to take the longer view and plan to pay it forward. What you are doing looks fine to me especially at the level you are at.

I like filling other people's crates and i'm happy to see that they always return the favor (at least most of them). Of course the xp gained and the "thank-you" letters are more than welcomed :-)

Yes I absolutely plan on paying it forward one day and help out a new generation of noobs...
