I admit it, I messed up! Being new to the game I somehow managed to use gems to get myself a TH5 without upgrading most of my attack and defense structures. Now I'm slowly playing catch-up. What should I focus on first? Offense or defense? What is more important at this low level in the game? ~ Rex
I would go mainly for offense, I have started my second account and I'm at townhall 5 now. I suggest using your elixir to upgrade your troops and then use the builders for defenseive things.
trust me, ur lucky by the time u realized it, ur lucky u were only TH5 or else u've been in for a big mess. getting back on track for a TH5 should've too bad, just higher ur trophies to where other TH5 mainly are or lower them. if ur TH is upgrading to 6, cancel it.
id go with offense as a PM TH5, u'd be like a TH3 so u have no chance offense will be ur biggest priority. upgrade ur lab to lvl 3 and max out the troops u mainly use and lightning spell first.

I actually disagree. While it is not important to max any TH before TH7, you should still be well developed for each TH level. You should NEVER rush any town hall level, even if its from TH4 to TH5Quote:

Offense, max out your troops, army camps, barracks.... But when you have a builder free, then upgrade the defensive structures.

As most have mentioned, focus on offense first (upgrade your camps, troops, and get the spell factory). Then you'd be able to raid for more gold and upgrade your offense.
Assuming lets say you are a TH5 premature with level 1 walls and level 1 troops.
No point building up defence as 2 million gold is nothing at early levels. Even if you had maxed 2 million gold after a 100% raid you might lose 200k, and still 1.8million can get you those upgrades.
Main priority buildings are: Barracks, Army Camp, Laboratory, Gold storages, Elixir Storages. These will help you for the OFFENSIVE bit first... Then follow up your defences one by one depending on how much $$ you get within that period.. Max them out before going to TH6. Walls get them to level 5 if you have spare $$. Any unspent gold should be put here and not kept in your storages on excess, because since you're premature TH5, you're more likely going to get raided easily from other people so spending all this "GOLD" will put people off from raiding you. unless they are going for trophy [you can't do anything about this]
Since you gemmed towards TH5, you can also afford to get some gems and get 4 OR 5 builders (5 for convenience but 4 is doable). This is the only thing I sorta recommend gemming on, it proves useful in the long run. I wouldn't gem on time because these upgrades are less than 2-3 days at TH5, just wait out a bit and raid back the $$ in order to cover spent $$ during the upgrade time.
NOW the tip is to use full army camp of archers. Scout out for abandoned collector bases (hint hint, easy money over attacking storages and trying so hard). These normally range 150k++ with no shield, and the mines are full (level 7++). Unless the storages are so badly defended [ie they're defending their town hall] go for it! This was a mistake I made before and now I realized easy $$ in collectors which requires not much thinking and skill. Just control how much you spam troops for each collector [i tend to go overboard easily due to excitement]

get your barracks to a good level and max you army camps. Then you can do troops in lab with elixir and use gold to upgrade defences ;)
Offense but dont upgrade ur TH until u finished both
Attack first, defense second, walls and everything third, town hall forth. :)
