Look at Claytons base and his Mortars are outside, I have seen several other Champion players with outside Mortars also even when they have stuff such as Barracks inside, it just doesn't make sense to me, would anyone care to explain why Champion league players would Expose their Mortars like that?
Most likely because a lot of golems or other various larger troops are used and the players believe the mortars become useless.
A champ might be able to answer this more eloquently than I but the way I understand it is that tier one troops which the mortar can mow down in droves are not the major problem at Champ, combine this with the fact that the mortar is reasonably high HP means it makes sense not to protect it.
Mortars are usually only effective against tier 1 troops with relatively low HP. Tier one troops are usually only used to lure CC and heroes, and then they're is golems, pekkas, and level 40 BK's that won't be affected much by the mortar
Anybody know if a level 8 mortar will one shot a level 2 witch?

If you can predict where someone will attack from your traps will be more useful as you can predict where the troops will go. Mortars are less useful the higher in trophies you go in the game though where players are using high hp troops and fast troops that avoid the blasts.
