Increasing Game Immersion
One of the overlooked features of this game is it's immersion. I'm not sure how many players actually sit down and play the game with their undivided attention, and if you haven't I highly recommend you do, but they're missing a whole other aspect of the game. Watching a battle replay with headphones in, you can hear the variety of sounds as the battle wages on. The "dodgeball-esque" sound of the mortar firing, the clang of the barbarians sword as their steel slices into the wall. These elements help draw you, as a player, into the miniature world you are controller of.
My idea will help increase that immersive aspect of the game.
Imagine that your miniature world is real, following the physics and laws of our natural world. Should you be graced with the power to view from above, and then at a moments notice zoom in your attention to a specific area (as the game allows you to do) the ferocity of war should become instantly apparent. This means details should intensify, the weapons of the barbarians, the bows of the archers, the grotesque faces of goblins. Sounds should get louder and envelope you. Every mortar hit should feel like the ground is shaking beneath you, every cannon fire should be felt in your chest. The moment of war should rise up and smack you in the face.
And vice versa, zooming back out should bring a calming feeling. The details blur away, back into their general shapes and the sound of war fades off in the distance as you again sit on high in the clouds as ruler of your domain.
Currently zooming in or out of a battle is stale. The level and intensity of sound remains the same, the details simply increase in size as opposed to revealing more style, and texture. It gets the job done, being able to more delicately place and control your troops, but this game could deliver so much more than just "getting the job done"
The increase in immersion by changing sound and detail levels as the battles are zoomed in and out would be an immediate increase in the quality of the game, and I certainly hope the option is discussed amongst the design team! Thank you!
