As someone that raids with both troops, and has both at level 6, you should without a doubt upgrade giants first (assuming you raid with them as well).

When you compare the L5 version of both troops with the L6 version, the increase in performance is so much more with Giants. I honestly don't think that anyone who says archers uses both troops at L6.

it honestly doesn't matter, pick one to upgrade, then upgrade the other one next. It won't make or break your army if you choose one over the other first. They're both important.
