I have an iPad mini and my son has a Samsung. I set him up on Hay Day and we want to be friends. I don't see Gamecenter available for him and he is too young to have an active Facebook account. How do we become friends?

FB unfortunately is the only way. You can set him an account up that is only hayday related. Password protect it so only you can log him in and try it that way. Of course kids being kids they always find a way around things don't they?
He is under age and cannot have an account unless I lie about his age? He is only 8. I tried to set him up and they said no. So I searched age limits and I saw 13. I am not worried about him facebooking.
Assuming you have a spare FB account (or borrow from another family member)
Use any FB account to connect to his farm temporarily during which:
- make contacts with his farm
- made him on your last follower tab, sign out of Facebook then you will be able to follow him.
- ask him to sign out of Facebook, access your farm through Followers tab then follow you.
You both will be in each other's Follower tab. Unfollow/Follow (tap the ribbon twice) switch you to first place if you get new followers.
Your son won't need FB connection again to be visited by you (he's on your follower list) or visit your farm (you are in his friend bar and likely will be soon in his Last Helper tab too).
