My Idea for Breathing New Life into Clash of Clans

Before I begin, I would like to say that while I play Clash of Clans nearly every day, I have a busy life outside the game and don’t have time to search the forums for related ideas. Please accept my apology if you have read something similar to these ideas for the fifth time. If it is your first time hearing them, I hope I convey my idea clearly enough so that you can share in my vision of better clashing.

I feel that a large population of clashers is desperate for something new and exciting. Whether it’s new content, reworked match making or “clan wars”, I believe the community needs something that brings some intrigue and excitement back to the game. So here is my idea…

We add ONE building. Yes, just one. At town hall level 10, we currently have access to a ton of buildings and I don’t like the idea of cramming more stuff into my tiny, village-square map. So how does ONE building add excitement and intrigue while keeping close to the way players currently clash? We add upgrades to the units already available to us. That’s right. We use what we already have. So big whoop, what would upgrades do? We already have a laboratory. Well, before you write me off, let me explain and I hope you can share in the vision.

I really enjoy that x-bows and inferno towers have 2 modes of defense. It gives the game some variability. You have disco towers? No more hog raids but you put yourself at risk to dragons, golems and pekkas. You turn x-bows to ground only? Infantry beware but I hope your air defenses are in strategically safe locations.

By providing a strength to a tower (or unit), it innately gives it a disadvantage that requires player ingenuity and skill to overcome while providing the player with a unique niche in his/her battle plan. I propose we add ONE building which would unlock TWO options for each unit currently in the game. These upgrades would NOT be better, but would add variability and allow a player to choose more specifically how he/she would like to clash. A player could keep the vanilla unit as it is currently in the game, or*, they could choose ONE of the TWO options. Each option would come with a slight penalty. We now have tripled the amount of units currently in game without adding any new units, barracks, or heroes. Only ONE upgrade may be active at a time but a player can research any of the options at any time to override the current upgrade. This would allow you to go back to a previous upgrade if you would like. I would suggest the upgrades not be available until town hall 6 or 7 and cost a significant amount of elixir (possibly more than the cost to max the unit in the laboratory at equivalent town hall level that the upgrade becomes available). Upgrades progressively become available as you progress in town hall level.

Some ideas:
Barbarian

1. Shield- Barbarian receives a shield that reduces damage taken. (Or just gives him more HP, whatever). Penalty- slightly decreases move speed and attack damage.
2. Charge- Once deployed, the barbarian will charge towards the nearest enemy (tower etc.) with a short burst of speed, closing the distance between himself and his target. Penalty- slight decrease in hit points.

Archer

1. Long Bow- Increases the archers range (possibly more than wizard towers). Penalty- decreases attack damage and movement speed.
2. Flaming Arrows- Lights target on fire and adds 1 DPS for 7 seconds (stackable- this would be great for swarms of archers). Penalty- slight decrease in starting attack damage.

Giant

1. Toughness- Giants gain a decent amount of extra hit points. Penalty- slightly increases housing space and build time
2. Fists of Fury- Giants gain added attack damage. Penalty- decrease in hit points.

Dragon

1. Grounded- Dragons become so large they can longer fly. Gain 2 heads, hit points and can attack up to 3 targets if in range (would work like disco inferno without the constant stream of damage). Penalty- Significant decrease to attack damage. No longer an air unit.
2. Air Mastery- Dragons which move slightly faster, have an increased attack speed and also require less housing space. Penalty- Slight decrease in attack damage. Decrease in hit points.

The point would be to add variety to the current units and give players added tactics to use in their clashing. Players receive greater choice in play style that requires knowledge of the game and skill. My suggestions for upgrades are purely ideas and any set of TWO upgrades would be most welcome in my eyes.

Other examples could be healers that only heal one unit but heal significantly more. Pekkas could have some kind of cleave (making them maybe viable for CC defenses). Any suggestions are as good as mine; I simply think that adding variety would greatly sweeten the experience to all players. Please add any thoughts and/or take the poll.

Penalties have to be harsh enough such that a vanilla unit is just as intriguing. By adding diversity, it livens up play-style. Those were purely ideas to demonstrate a concept of adding variety.

with a bit of changing this vould be amazing and as u say "game changing" i may just add this feture to my troop idea so thamks heaps :)

I was hoping that you were talking about adding modes to defenses, but this is good too. I've seen similar ideas before, but not where all 3 modes were of equal strength. Very detailed and balanced, adds creativity in battles, well done!:o

Hey I'd love it for towers as well.

I think this is exactly what CoC needs and I honestly think they should have implemented more of an upgrade tree into their troops and defenses from the beginning. I'm actually thinking about posting my own thread about possible upgrades for Defenses.

The concept alone is great, it's an easy way to add great variety in to the game without going wrong with a new gimmicky troop.
Another positive is that is can add variety for the middle as well as higher up players. As most suggests I've seen only cater to the higher levelled players.

Of course the stats need to balanced well, but you already know that.

Overall an excellent idea.

This also leads the way to allow this sort of idea for defences. E.g multi target cannon (weakened damage), poisoned archer towers for damage over time effect (weakened damage or more damage done over time) or wizard towers with a slow effect. (Weakened damage) the brackets are the penalties.

I think that this is a great idea and if supercell would do this, then people will not get bored of the game after they've reached level 10 + maxed out all buildings.

My only concern is that this may not be possible anytime soon and if the game is really so far deep into trouble with possibly becoming boring then I don't believe all these new additions could come in time. If this were to happen it would in essence double, at least double, the amount of programming lines and with the amount of time it has taken them to get this far I don't think it would be able to happen in under 1-2 years assuming they haven't already thought of it. I m not trying to rain on your parade I'm simply showing this from a programmers view point as I have a little experience with it. (not on clash of clans)

Very true. I thought I had read SC was purchased by a Japanese firm back in October. I don't know about you but I feel like they have made some decent updates since then attempting to address important issues. I do know from news articles SC is pulling in quite a bit of cash and the only response I would give to your point would be that I would hope they use the money to expand the team to keep up with demand or (like many businesses) sell the rights for a quick lump sum to another company who has the capabilities to increase the games value.

I don't know how you play but time in this game is as valuable a resource as any other. At TH 10 I'm currently sitting at 4 million gold saving for a xbow upgrade. I usually get attacked within 15 minutes of queuing up my troops holding this amount of loot. Having TH 10 towers, it never hurts too bad but I lose around 100k if just 1 storage goes down. That doesn't hurt too bad but I am currently forced into a cookie cutter build (takes ~18 min) in an attempt to link consecutive attacks together before I am attacked. I don't care what anyone says, you can only go so far with an army training costing <30 min. You have to have better troops to put a dent into a decent base. The counter, therefor, is to allow ME to do more with what I have. Give ME options of how to use troop combinations and their synergistic tactics. I wouldn't care what the options were (I could think of many, and the ones I presented I came up with while I wrote the post), just give me the ability to do more with what I have.

Adding variety would give more strengths to bases and troop combinations but it would also present more weaknesses, equating in more opportunities and more responsibility on the player to be successful.

I always wanted a different way to attack in clash of clans but are very limited by town hall attack strageties in this game to be effective.

Overall I like the idea. Even something that offers one alternative. And it would be something they'd probably implement in pieces to give themselves programming and balancing time.



But it'd be nice to have more options available when making an attacking compositions. Plus picking between two options opens the doors to more strategy

wallbreaker

1 double trouble: wallbreakers bombs splits in 2 smaller bombs after it exploded with 2 times less damage penalty: slightly decreased movement speed
2 bigger boom: bombs splash damage increases
penalty: slightly decreased attack damage

goblin

1 bigger bags: goblin does now 2.5 damage to resources
penalty: slightly decreased movement speed

2 swift feets: goblin has slightly increased movement speed
penalty: slightly less hitpoints

balloon

1 kamikaze: balloons "crash" damage increases
penalty:slightly less normal attack damage

2 boom boom :slightly increased splash damage
penalty: slightly decreased hitpoints

also, would it work on DE troops and hero's too?

if so, would the hero things be the same as with the normal barb/archer or would it be different?

I think that this is a good idea but could the troops look different.(size or color)

well said to the OP argument, and crucial to remember. I fully support this idea. It has lots of potential within the game.

I don't know if I did not catch this or not but are these permanent or do they last one battle?

Hey those were great! :) I really liked the wallbreaker idea.
I think together, the community could generate a very balanced, well thought out set of upgrades for SC to consider.

I think it would work with dark elixer troops, definitely. As for heroes, that's kind of tricky. To be honest I think I'd want something pretty drastically different for heroes to give each one a very unique feel since we have just 2. That would quell the talks of adding another hero. But, I'd also be fine with leaving them be for a while. What do you think?

I think they should be permanent. But I think the option to change back to vanilla, or any upgrade, should always be available if the player wants to pay for another upgrade again.

1. I too, like the concept.
2. Id like to see upgrades that make production times faster without using gems to boost the barracks. Example would be to create a balloon that only takes 5 minutes to make, etc.
3. id like to see this expanded to all aspects of the game, like buildings and defenses...cannon grapeshot, anyone?
4. Give me a version of lightning that only targets one spot, but does 2000 hp of damage.
5. programming this would take additional efforts, but they should have thought of that in their business model planning. Get the resources necessary to keep the game evolving and interesting or it will go the way of the "Rubiks cube". :eek:

This is a wonderfully unique idea. All I see is the need for goblin, wall breaker, healer, and P.E.K.K.A. variations...

Sugestions

Goblin:
Agile Thief- Goblins get a 15% damage reduction from mortars. Penalty, DPS decreased.
Hot Hands- Goblins attack speed is increased. Penalty, movement speed is reduced.

Wall Breaker:
Kamikaze- Wall Breakers deal 15% more damage to walls and have an area splash in which all buildings take 5% more damage. Penalty, WB HP reduced
Unnatural- WB are not targetted by cannons. Penalty, Wizard towers do double damage.

Healer
Angelic Prescence- Troops recently healed get a minor speed and attack speed boost for 3 seconds. Penalty, Healer has less health.
Pure Sacrifice- When a healer dies, all troops in a 3 tile radius of the fallen healer gain a heal spell boost for 5 seconds. Penalty, attack speed of troops within the spell radius is reduced.

P.E.K.K.A.
Tin Man- P.E.K.K.A.'s movement speed and attack speed are increased. Penalty, P.E.K.K.A.'s armor/hp is reduced.
Ram- P.E.K.K.A. uses the mighty horns atop his helm to attack the first hidden tesla or X-bow he is shot by for 2.5 times normal damage. (Get's a speed boost similar to the barb. charge for this attack) 1-time per battle ability. Penalty, P.E.K.K.A.'s attack and movement speed are reduced after this attack has been made.
