How do you get the things you need to upgrade
You get them through playing the game. You can find them by harvesting crops or gathering eggs, milk, etc. You can find them in mystery toolboxes. And you can sometimes find them for sale in the newspaper, but you have to move quick, because they are popular items and sell out fast. You can also win one on occasion - by participating in "events" (if there's one ongoing, it will be on the noticeboard by your roadside stand) or on the Wheel of Fortune.
To speed this up, you can try "wheating." Because wheat is the fastest crop to grow, people will plant all their fields with wheat, and harvest it as quickly as possible. This will maximize the free items you get from harvesting crops. (But then you have to get rid of the wheat somehow. This is why people sell wheat for as little as 10 for 1 coin in their roadside stands.)
