wonder how other players manage about apple trees

I have exactly this experience too. When I traded all my axes for planks (I rarely get them) I couldn't get any axe for a couple of days, although I was cropping and harvesting like crazy. And I learnt my lessons to never totally get rid of them.
Now I carry about 70-90 of each and when I have over 100+, I start to cut trees like crazy or sell saws from time to time too.

I sell to farm visitors only wheat and corn to get more room in my silo, so I can crop and harvest more. The more you crop, the more chances you have to get the tool you need.

Somewhere in the forum I read you need to crop on 72 fields at once and the same product to get the tool each time you harvest. And it really works. So, if you have less fields, you get a tool on every second, third harvest, etc depending on how many fields you are able to crop. Higher levels have more fields. I'm at level 88 and have 116 fields.

I have a theory that Hay Day tends to give you more of what you already have a lot of. The ads you see in the DD, the things that show up in toolboxes and when harvesting crops, caring for pets, picking up manufactured items, etc.

I tend to get a lot of saws and axes, and I suspect it's because I have so many.

I once tried selling off most of my axes, and I ended up not getting any (when I had been getting a lot). For the first time in weeks I had to leave dead bushes around.

I sold off a bunch of saws to re-balance, so to speak, and started getting more axes again. I quickly rebuilt my stock, and now try to keep them roughly equal.
