I used 16-20 balloons and the rest minions at 2000-2300 for DE, raiding for nothing under 1.8k DE.
I'm TH8.
Gold is a by-product for me, as I am farming DE.
Unity posted a DE farming thread recently - its totally worth the read, even if he admits its out of date (since the update).
I have been using Minions, Balloons and Archers or as I like to call them "Archies Mini Balls" haha lol
I also keep a few rage spells handy and when your focus is on DE, you will target bases that have at least 800 DE and upwards, I can't help you with range at the moment, as I am still moving through the ranges. Please let me know if you find a good spot - I do know that the higher you go, near 2000 the better the DE, but then the bases tend to be near max level TH9 or mid range TH10's.
