Sure, some people like that tradeoff, but 90%+? That just doesn't make sense to me. Again, if I'm missing something here, please explain it to me.
Second, I don't really think that this has killed balloonians. It's definitely made it harder, but it still seems doable IMO. No, I'm not at 3500 or anything, but I'm hoping to hit champ again with bloonions (no gems this time so it's slow going) and up to 3050.... no problem with multimode. If I have plenty of spells with me (I usually don't, but I sure would way up in champ), rage still gets the job done pretty well. And there is always the option of settling for one stars. Most bases still don't seem to be designed to combat bloonions very well, and nibbling around the edges can still get you to 50% with pretty minimal exposure to infernos in many cases. Slower rising may be a problem given how easy it is to lose on defense (which, again, GoWiWi seems pretty tough to stop, especially without single mode infernos), but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say these kinds of tactics are done.
I don't know how much weight this carries, but there is a champ player in Dark Sky (where I'm pushing right now) who still uses bloonions at around 3750, and he has shared several 2 star replays lately. Most of them have single target infernos, but hey, they are still out there (and I don't get why they wouldn't be).
Btw, this is me speaking as a player from what I have seen.
