I'm a keen ballonion'r these days... haven't seen a lot of TH8 lately, but from what I remember they don't stand a chance vs a TH9 army of balloons and minions. Based on my experiences of overkill and underestimation, I now treat a TH8 as a great way to get 2-3 stars with my full army, no spells required (unless they are under-developed, in which case I might risk using only a portion of my army). If they have a particularly good layout, I might settle for 2 stars. A good layout for only 3 air defenses, is to bias two towards one side, with the other one opposite, and stack your tessla dnd wizard towers pretty central. That way, you have to attack two of the air def, leaving the other one to fire at your troops for a long time. Or you just spend a rage spell, and 3-star it.... The wiz towers for TH8 are not a huge threat to level 6 balloons and level 5 minions, unless they are maxed and central; same for tessla.

If you're farming as TH8 though, I doubt you'll see many ballinion attacks?, too expensive unless you're in Crystal+ where DE is more abundant, surely? And even if you get the max DE from a TH8, you'd get a lot more attacking a TH9 or TH10... I'd imagine the only ballinion attacks you'd see, when farming as TH8, would be from bored TH9 gold farmers who have loads of DE and loads of elixer, and brew the odd strong army to be sure of squeezing every last drop of gold form poor little TH8... Everyone in the know, farms DE with ballinions against mostly TH10, the odd TH9...

Below my thoughts on the key differences (it also shows why all the transformer/hybrid bases are ♥♥♥♥)

Trophy base wants to look weak to attract weaker opponents, farming base must look tough. No sloppy design here.
Appearance is our main weapon. If someone thinks he can't take this on, he'll just snipe the TH and give us a shield.

Trophy base wants to win, hence it needs to protect all those squishy little buildings to prevent 50% loss.

The classic design is to surround the farming base with "dummy" buildings to "protect" them.
Why someone would want to protect them in the first place? Moreover, protecting them with single shot defenses is utterly ineffective.

These buildings can be used to actually help and make difference:

-distracting goblins inside the base near the storages
-slowing down and funneling BARCH in range of splash defenses
-luring goblins/barbarians into traps
-separating giants from the support troops to prevent distraction of splash defenses
-pushing spawn further away
-bloat the base to make truly unlurable cc

all true and valid points but after the attacker takes the 50% and th they usually carry on and send in the Giant/Healer combo.

Yep th8 is a death trap for th9 and th10 wanting loot. Im actually considering moving to th9 with only my defenses maxxed. Because It would be as easy to get loot as th8 before the update and you will actually have a chance to keep your loot.

Something that works extremely well with any army relying on giants or golems to be meat shields is to first identify the most popular side ppl attack on the top half or bottom half (mines the bottom u bait the troops using upgrading defences as they still target them and because they are upgrading most ppl ignore them causing giants to go to a death trap where if designed right should restrict them to do a lower Impact of these armies without compromising other parts of your base

Really I'm a th8 and my gold storage is full so I'm surprised ppl are saying th8 is a death trap i thought th9 would be because of th10 hoggers

We can control the side which gets attacked by having perfectly symmetric base, and pushing back spawn points on all sides but one.
