Tip one. Offense is everything.
Upgrade camps. and CC to maximize your offensive potential every TH you upgrade to. (Town Hall)
upgrade your Lab and troops. the lab is the biggest bottleneck of each TH.
you need to out attack any potential losses you will face on defense. generally its 3-5 or more attacks per def is a good measuring stick. its ok to ride out a shield and let your pumps do some work for you.
if you fail a raid, watch replays to get a sense of what went wrong.
join a clan and get some in game help with donations and chat with folks who can learn you some things.
look through the forum in the search function and find some similar topics. also Youtube is a good source of intel too. just know its not all accurate, and most vids are cherry picked raids to highlight their topic of video.

if you invest a small amount of actual money into this game, get the builders. the 5th one is like 2500 gems. (ask for a google card or iTunes card if you cant purchase otherwise. mow a lawn or something. lol.)

trophies generally don’t matter, only loot
I agree pretty much with what Klavious just said. 5 builders are a must, trophies are irrelevant, and don't get caught up with massive available loot from a base you have no hope of getting loot from. Find dead bases, GoBarch, rinse and repeat. Enjoy the game!
