Production building slots

How many slots should a production building have? Is there a recommended number for each production building?

Here's the list.

Smelter
Feed mill
Dairy
Juice maker
Ice cream machine
Jam
Bakery
Sugar mill
Cake oven
Pie oven
BBQ grill
Loom
Popcorn

Recommendations are very welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I would definitely open all slots in the sugar mill and dairy first. Then I would probably open a few additional slots on the feed mill(s), ice cream machine, cake oven, juice maker, popcorn maker and pie oven.

I wouldn't worry about the jam maker or smelter(s) right now since those products take so long to make.

I think most people try and open the max for dairy and sugar. I think at the moment I have 7 slots for each of those.

On the others, I have tried for 1 slot per item that can be made on it. So, for instance, I only have 3 on my loom as I can only currently make 3 different items, 5 on my juice, 4 on the ice cream etc. But I think most people try to add more on any machines that prepare things quickly and less slots for things that take ages.

I haven't any extras on the smelters as they take so long to make things that there is no point opening more. The jam one I've only got 3 on since they take quite a while too.

My rule of thumb is if it's something I always need a lot of, open all slots, otherwise I gauge how many I need to finish production just as I get home from work, as I set everything to produce just before I head off in the morning, and that is the longest I'm away from. Y farm.

I've always been to cheap to open more than about three on anything. Maybe I should rethink that. Hmmm.....

Like everyone else says, open all nine on dairy and sugar. I suggest also opening extras on popcorn, and bakery since boats ask for many more of those when they do. I find that I need all five smelters and have three slots on each. I can't keep my jewelry machine running as it is and I have ore falling out of my mine just waiting to be smelted ( please someone tell me if that is a real word).

i have extra on the grill but don't think they are as necessary. That may change now that the salad machine wants roasted tomatoes. I also don't seem to need as many pies as I have slots for. There seems to be less need for pies, but because I have the slots, I tend to fill them up and use up too much sugar. The same for cakes. I also like to have extra on the juice so I can throw a bunch on there while I sleep.

i started out with one for each of the three knitted things just so I could keep an even supply but I haven't expanded to account for the scarf because of the update which tells us how many we have in stock.

it really depends on how you play. If you play all the time, then you only need to add enough to keep your machines busy overnight, (assuming you sleep at all). If you work, you might need more. Plus if you have trouble remembering to fill the little buggers up, the more you have is better. I have four on the candy machine and jelly beans take a full day, but caramels take considerably less time. I tend to forget this machine a lot but with four slots, it is usually churning away.
i also forget to go fishing and if I had more than three slots on the lure maker, I wouldn't be stuck with just three fish with each trip.

you will find that there is no one answer to this question since people play differently and have different priorities. Some people for instance feel the need to sleep, some get tired of rushing around at the last minute putting supper on the table. some think that homework really needs to be done and handed in on time, and some refuse to take their game into the bathroom with them and yet still some people think that their boss would throw a hissy fit if they tended their farms instead of their work. I don't believe those people actually exist, but I have been told that they do.

You know Tigerr, I have heard that too but I think it's just a myth.

Based on my experience and my own slots, here they are
Smelter: 2 each
Feed mill: 5-6
Dairy: fully open. (PS: I can't play 24 hours a day or check HD regularly so this is important for me. But I found my friends who can check HD regularly don't need them fully open)
Juice maker: fully open
Ice cream machine: 1 for each kind, so probably 5-6
Jam: 5
Bakery: 5-6
Sugar mill: fully open
Cake oven: fully open
Pie oven: fully open
BBQ grill: 5-6
Loom: 5-6
Popcorn: 6-7

Excellent answer, Tiggerr, but I just wanted to offer a technical correction: Although real life pies use lots of sugar and (mostly) don't use eggs, HayDay pies use NO sugar and LOTS of eggs. That's why I LOVE to make HayDay pies--helps me get rid of eggs, and make XP without using sugar, all at the same time.
