Most of my clan is masters without gemming. Look up Wayward Thieves. We're top 150 right now.
I can't fathom how this works without at least boosting the spell factory. How many attacks do you get between defenses?

Yep. TH9, almost Master 2 without using a single gem for spell/barracks/heroes.
As most of the people here have mentioned, reach masters (even master 1) without gems, even spell boost or whatever is still possible. However champs league is a whole different story. I'm sure if you tried to stay online 8 hours straight twice a day and waited out all those spell cook time, then maybe, but it's incredibly hard and requires a lot of patience and time.
Master with loons and minions.
