Supercell ID Scam Awareness

Heyo,

Since the advent of supercell ID, scammers have been attempting to exploit peeps unfamiliar with it. I have seen and experienced these scammers in action relatively frequently and decide to make a short awareness thread for some of you by presenting the general scenario and results that you may face:


As you chat on global, a max th9 with Titan badge starts saying something like "Can anyone play my account for a few days because of I have a exam next week?" or "Who wants a free account?". Reality is things are too good to be true, and if you are not alert, you may fall into the hands of scammers who exploit your own greed for their advantages.


Scammers would then ask you to make a supercell ID by typing in their emails and then they would promise to send you a 6 digit code. Sounds good right? You get their account on your device now! In reality, if you do not have a supercell ID for your village yet, you have just tied your hard earned village to the scammers' email accounts and they have full control of your village. Congratulation you played yourself.

Yes, people should know, but unfortunately, we don't live in Shouldland, and people very largely are idiots.

Or if you follow the ToS. Nothing to worry about because sharing accounts in the first place is ground for termination. Am I a bad person for not feeling bad for the people who would fall for this in the first place?

Nope.

The only people who can possibly be caught by this scam are those who want to cheat the system and get something for nothing. I have very little sympathy for them.

2 weeks ago legend League scammer come in my clan

Yesterday a titan 2 player asked me the same, but i am the leader of level 11 clan and i know about this game.

From my part I try to aware or inform players on global when I see someone is trying scam other players.😅

This is not any different from the scammers before sc ID. There will always be idiots out there trying to get an illicit advantage and get burned by it. That has nothing to do with sc ID. And frankly we’ve had threads and threads about it and it’s been announced ingame. If people are still unaware of it ot haven’t switched to it, a new thread about it won’t help them.

If you see this kind of shenanigans going on in global just tell them off right then and there.

What makes Super Cell ID different is that you don't have to share your info to get burned. You enter the other person's email, which seems less nefarious, unless of course, you have a clue about how it works.

If you see this kind of thing in Global, just hit the report button. Maybe SC will see it and take action.

Though I think the post will do little good it is a good post. I thought about doing one myself but the people that have this happen to them generally don't use the forums. I figured it would just get closed.

We see a new post "I lost my account" every few hours and it is usually by a fresh spawn that blames their friend or brother. One guy admitted "I did wrong." Good for him. For every one person that comes to the forums afterwards, they must be a lot that we never hear from. The scam seems to be working well. It's probably mostly happening to teens.

It's a good post OP but I don't think it will help much.

That, in my opinion, is the biggest reason that someone will fall for it. You aren't being asked for your details, someone else is giving you theirs. And as your village is already linked to either google or apple via your email (and you know it is), then they have to be giving you their village right ?

Shame a lot of people seem to fall for it but at least it's only a game and it just might help educate them a little so that they don't fall for a bigger scam in the future. One that actually causes real issues.

I hope you took screenshots and reported the phishing attempt to SC Support.

Thankfully my village is so bad that the scammer returned it.

Question: If I am connected to SC ID, there would be nothing to worry about? I would have the guys account, but he doesn't have mine. So, what to worry about? The scamer will lose his account. Or is he not even giving you your SC ID code? But then, your Account isn't lost??

I am confused.. ^^

If your account is connected to supercell ID, this tactic won’t work.
The scammers are having people who have not linked their account to a supercell id, link their account to an email that belongs to the scammer

Scammer gives you his email. You set up SC-iD with that email. To verify it, SC send a code to that email address. Scammer gets verification code. Enters email and code into clash. Bam, your village is now linked to his email account.

If you already have SC-iD set up then I doubt you would lose your village as it's already tied to your email address, but I don't fancy putting that theory to the test somehow.

Oh darn I guess I have to say something on topic as well.


It surprises me how there’s often such a difference in people letting their guard down when approached online or not be on their toes.
You don’t hand out your car keys or your wallet to a total stranger in the streets who says he will bring it back in 2 hours.

You don’t event have to know the ins and outs of the SC ID to realize what you’re doing when you’re connecting your account to someone else’s email address. And if you realize that you don’t know enough about it why would you go along with what the total stranger says anyway ? If it smells like a scam (and any stranger telling you to mess with IDs does smell fishy) then you should stop what you’re doing in going along with what the other party wants but do your research first. Even or maybe especially when you don’t quite know yet why the scam is.

Nevertheless we should take one step back from this process and if people offer you to share or pass along accounts you need to realize that’s this is 1 too good to be true and 2 you should know this is a TOS violation. If they offer you cheap gems you ought to know this can’t be for real.

Furtermore people should really stop already being so darn impressed by a faux gold or a faux legend badge. In the game otherwise known as the Titan and Legend badges. Maybe this badge says something about the way they play the game but it says absolutely nothing about the person behind the badge. Douchebags are found in all echelons of society and certainly not restricted to the lower leagues.

Just don’t test it out, why would you want their email address anyway.
Oh the email they give you is empty and has never seen a village attached to it so no you don’t get their account.

I cannot speak for player support, but its always worth a shot to try and get your village back if you’re a victim of account phishing.
The person needs to contact Player Support though and they will probably investigate the situation.

That said you really should NOT let it come down to that because the damage could (and probably will) well and truly have been done by then.
Maybe your gems have been spent, maybe things have been upgraded you didn't want to upgrade. Or maybe you were the clan leader and your high level clan is now gone.

I stand by my plan if they attempt to do. Get their email and immediately go to one of those free gem phishing websites and sign them up. 😂😂😂

You would 'only' have a brand new th2 connected to the scammers Email on your device after it. Not sure if they would try to get your main account with a made up story from the support later. Just don't connect any account on your device to a strangers mail.

Oh, yeah. Forty three subscriptions to things people don't want, get em set up on those terrible scams that show up. I had a friend of mine get in a lot of trouble in high school for doing that to people

Well yes they can get banned if they use the “service”, however the email address they’re giving you to try and get you to connect your village to is of course “empty” when they give it to you meaning there is NO village attached to it when they’d give it to you.
So if you’re smart enough not to fall for their scam and sign that email up to one of those sites then there’s no village there. It’s not like they’re dumb enough to have their own village attached to it.

So if you want to get them banned send take screenshots of the phishing attempt, their profile with the important info such as player name, tag etc. and send those to support. They will investigate and no doubt ban the player trying to phish for accounts.

They also dont care about getting spam on the account. If it’s compromised they just create a new email address and try the next person.

Unfortunately I do not see this an awareness/public service - clashers fall prey to "scams" out of their own sense of greediness. There is plenty of information around SC ID on the forums and on SC in game information that would preclude these incidents from taking place.

Some will do anything to get something for free/gain an advantage - it is unfortunate but it is the state of gaming across many gaming platforms and not specifically endemic to SC.

I'd like to know more about how he 'forced' you to do a single thing. Did he hold your family at ransom? Did he have a gun on you? Surely there was more to it than just telling you to link his email to your account...

For example if you are linked to GC or GP and enter in a valid SC ID then it'd be like signing into another GC or GP account and you simply switch accounts.

SC ID is a great feature. But seriously implementation is very flawed. It should have been made to put our existing Email ID which ws connected to Google Play/Game Center, in making the SC ID. I was utterly surprised to see that I could have used an entirely new EMail ID. Hence I asked all my clan mates to straight away create SC ID with their currently linked email IDs.
Sadly more surprise was the way SC handled SC ID. They didn't hype it. Didn't make any promotions. Just a post in the tab.

No, there is no way you can be notified or know for sure, as any disciplinary action is a private matter between SC and that player. You’ve done the right thing to screenshot and report. It was possibly less wise to engage the person in chat. You’ve done your part to help keeping the game safer for all, so good on you for that.

Its just recently I noticed this thing mainly at the Norsk Global. And more often the claimers are from India/Pak/BD.

They just keep saying, they are quitting CoC. And want to give their account freely. I just tell them to quit playing and delete the app. :D

Well, the day season was reset, I saw Holps at Norsk. And was chatting. And there was a girl (obviously CatPhish) named Lily asking Holps to join her( actually his). As it was a season reset, I decided to see how desperate they can be. While visiting the claiming girl then said, can you please play my account for few weeks, I am going for a break for exams. I said, sorry I cant and its against the ToS to share the account. And she was begging. I said, I am reporting you if you keep saying this at the global. She left that clan.

Now, I am smart enough to not fall for scams in anyway. I know exactly how scams can happen to even some smart people. But still, there should be a way in the globals for reporting such clear attempts of scamming others.

The only known way of reporting is now the5 report per day for anyone. Which, I have doubts really is useful for the following:
1. Clans which are made for trading
2. Clans which offend people
3. People trading or scamming at globals everyday (especially at norsk)


I have in the past sent screenshots to SC and they thanked me personally for reporting such. But they later just denied to accept any sort of screenshots for reporting people. And, funnily enough, I followed back about the reported people, the accounts or the clans for trading still exist. So, I ended my case there. I even deleted all my policing screenshots, (why I should be doing it anyway?).

While I’m not 100%, I don’t believe this is accurate. Once a village is tied to a supercell ID, you can’t go back to using google play or game center.

Sorry, I don't get the point .... It doesn't really matter, if you lose you accounts to a scrammer or get a permanent ban for account sharing.

Krzeng9, I am afraid you are misinformed. The only way this will not work is if you have already linked your village to SC ID. If you are linked to Game Center or Google Play and you sign into SC ID with the scammers email they gain control of your account. And, as Activeleader pointed out, there is no way to get it back without the help of SC.

As far as those bashing the OP for the warning...warnings cant hurt. Yes I am aware that there are still idiots that will fall for this, and yes I am aware these scams rely on a persons greed and wilingness to ignore the TOS to try and cheat for an advantage. No one is expecting anyone to feel pity on these guys, but its not neccesary to wish them ill or hope to see them get scammed over one’s own self rigteousness. Just saying ‘well it serves them right’ is not helping with the problem. If one does not want to bother warning others themselves thats fine but no need to rip others if they want to put in the effort. If one doesnt want to spend time reading warnings thats a free choice available so go ahead and not read them (this post is on page 7 so anyone reading it has gone in here deep and of their own free will) It’s still a decent thing to do to keep the warnings up. It wont stop the nonsense but if it even slows a little thats good.

Sorry, but you are simply wrong here. If your account is not linked to a Supercell ID, and the scammer manages to link it to one, then you can no longer connect to that account from google play or Apple GC.

Why? What possible reason is there for you to tell your clanmates to do that just because it is what you prefer?

And why you think Supercell should for some reason have forced everybody to do it your preferred way is beyond me. Why do you think you have the right to say how everybody should do it?

This is a game made as much for kids as it is for adults. Most kids are used to getting everything for free. It sounds like you believe everyone should have an adult understanding of scams. Maybe you should have more sympathy in your life.

This is why we shouldn’t have global. This definitely won’t be a problem for Clash Royale unless you let randomers into your clan.

He got a point. The game is supposed to be played by 13 year old and I think even in that age kids should be aware of scams. If they get scammed, it's because they are not careful. But that doesnt mean the scammers are good.

He got a point. The game is supposed to be played by 13 year old and I think even in that age kids should be aware of scams. If they get scammed, it's because they are not careful. But that doesnt mean the scammers are good.

Not at all. Scammers exist, that’s an unfortunate part of life and even more so online life. Adults have a part to play in keeping their children safe online. The person I was replying to seemed to be suggesting the game was made for young kids (it’s not) and that we (Ajax in particular) expect an adult understanding from them: we don’t, teens are kids not adults, and need parental assistance to understand how to be safe online precisely because they are vulnerable (despite adolescent swagger). Nobody is blaming anyone, just saying that more can be done to heighten awareness of how to avoid scams and protect the vulnerable from being taken advantage of by scammers.

I never said that. I don't blame the kids. But I feel it's their responsibility to be aware of scammers. If one is aware of the problem, the problem of scamming wont exist. But there are kids who get scammed just because they want free gems etc. You cant stop the scammers as there will always be people who wanna steal stuff from others, So its better to make kids aware of it.

This post is spot on. I can't speak for other cultures but in the USA, a obscene amount of parents don't act like parents. A lot of kids never have a chance to get educated, parental education is just as important as what they learn at school.

I literally just tried that. I just switched accounts.

I was on my main account linked to GP. I then logged into a SC ID I set up for one of my other accounts. I was put into my other account and then I disconnected from SC ID and returned to my main account.

You've confused what he's saying. He's not saying that you can't login to your "main account" using Google Play after you've been logged into another account that's on Supercell ID. He's saying that if you should change your "main account" over to Supercell ID, you will not be able to play it using Google Play any more.

The point is, you can be scammed out of your account whether you are on Supercell ID or Google Play. The only difference is whether you give a scammer access to your account at the same time as you, or instead of you.

It could be looked at as a life lesson learned, but that is how people learn about real world thing, is by experience.

How many stories have you read in the papers, 16 yr old kid dies from a drug OD. You read the Obit and they are straight A students, active in multiple school and church groups. Made a bad choice one day, and it cost them their lives, are you to blame it on the parents because no matter what they might have taught their child, the child still makes a mistake?

There are always exception to the rule. Yes, I have read a few stories in the paper about some valedictorian falling victim to drug abuse but those stories in the paper is nothing compared to the hundreds if not thousands of teenagers in crack houses with parents nowhere to be found or just as addicted as they are. These are stories that the papers do not tell us. However, I digress.

13 year olds are not quiet "cooked" yet and they do fall victims to scams quiet easily but SC is not the one responsible for their education. That responsibility falls on to their parents. Global is filled with children who are running amok in the internet with no adult supervision. So much so that the usual response to people complaining about global is to not go there since global is ruled by 12 year old children.

I appreciate the OP's thought on spreading awareness and I have to admit that I did learn a few things on this thread. But being that the forum represent less than 1% of the total player base, I doubt that it would have much of an impact. If the OP would have tried this in global he would probably have been run off of global while children are telling him to mind his own business.

I have to agree with you. Although I understand the view that people should be held responsible for their actions and players who fall for a scam while attempting to do something that violates the TOS don't have "clean hands," I don't think it's right to blame the victim. People of all ages and mental abilities can become victim of a scam, and many who fell for the "want my free account?" bait may not have realized they were doing anything wrong. I don't think the result (loss of their own account) is in line with their desire to play more Clash of Clans.

Nope.

They do not have morality issues due to being scammed, or due to not knowing they are being scammed.

They have morality issues IF they have no idea that it is wrong to try and get free gems or a pre-built advanced account in the game.

If they do know that, but go ahead anyhow, well one could argue that is another type of morality issue, but I think almost everybody has at some point in their lives (particularly when young) done something they know is wrong but have gone ahead anyhow.

I am not blaming the victim here either, just saying I don't have all that much sympathy for them. What they were doing isn't on anything remotely like the same level as what the scammer (who is setting out to deliberately harm another individual) is doing.

But it is something they should have known was wrong, even if they thought something along the lines of "who is really getting hurt by it - just a faceless giant company who make millions every day").

Now, maybe I'm a bad person, but I don't feel bad for that kid. Even at 13, you know that if something is too good to be true, then it probably is. How many different places does Supercell slap "Don't share personal info!" across all kinds of platforms? Even just in the game, it shows up on the loading screen and at the top of global chat. You have to know you're doing something wrong if you're A) giving away personal information and B) are seemingly getting something wildly valuable for just sharing your email address.

And you can hardly use the response, "But what if their parents are to blame for the kid not understanding?" Like I said, there are warning messages in-game. If you don't know any better, why would you take the word of a stranger on the internet over the advice the game you're playing gives you?

I guess this is where we agree to disagree. I dont believe kids who r 13 all know "if it is too good to b true, it prob is." I kno when I was a kid, shoot even when I was 18, I made many mistakes I would never make now bc I kno better. Having no sympathy fo victims in cases like the op's warning post is callous n those who carry mod status here to represent sc shouldnt b making statements like that in my opinion. Not only is it not sympathetic but irresponsible to have a stance like that under sc umbrella. Sorry to say but gives sc a bad image if stances like that r accepted.
