Best tip from forum posts

What's the best tip (so far) you ever got from reading forum posts? I'm at level 47 now so I'm guessing this might change as I get to higher levels or play for longer time.... My best tip so far was reading about trashing truck orders or sending boats away with no boxes filled. If there is a bad consequence for this, I haven't found it, and it is so stress relieving to know I don't have to fill every order or every box. Or wait all day for those 3 chocolate cakes to finish baking! I now have started trashing any order for metal bars, since it takes so long to make the darn things, and I'm trying to build my inventory of jewelry. Trashing orders is a great strategic tool!

I have no guilt now about being very selective in my orders. I trash anything over 2 required unless it is silly simple. I also trash any order that requires dairy (exception being ice cream cones) and any order asking for sugars. I delayed making jewelry for some time but now have 5 smelters running full time. Those jewelry orders are great as you get vouchers. Yesterday I got 2 gold vouchers which was really a surprise!

I am level 64 , and just last week learned by reading the forum that the exclamation tab next to the friends and followers tabs actually can contain content. What a time saver!

the best tip, though, I saw I think yesterday. I had never thought to fish selectively, dropping the line until my cast attracts a fish with a small circle, therefore rare. Wow! Since then I am getting much better fish.

and, off hay day topic directly, learning to do a screen shot was great overall knowledge to have.

My favourite tip from this forum is how to maximise the use of Tom - by having him fetch shovels to win back his cost in diamonds. I've done this twice now and even if I don't recoup all 15 diamonds, I've made at least ten or twelve of them back plus you get all the other items he fetches too (normally diamond rings for me). Happy farming all!

I am talking specifically about the wonderful ladies on the late lamented Captain III thread, and those who still work the Turbo Trucker thread - I NEVER would have had the guts to try those achievements without their help and support

Besides the tips already mentioned, I was glad to find out that I could rapidly flip from neighbors-to-neighbors roadside stand by tapping the neighbor icon on the stand. And if you make sure the friend bar is minimized, you can flip even faster.

Wow, I am learning more as I read this thread! Thanks for the Tom tip.

One of the best tips from this forum was how to tap away from a locked mystery box when closing the tab so that it followed you from farm to farm until it would open (about 8 -10 tries on average). I now never have to look too hard to find one. I've received tons of great stuff from this little tip.

Could you detail your post? What/how do you tap away from the toolbox? Are you not simply tapping the X in the upper corner? Thanks.

Since I am working on my TTII, i have had time to really look through the forum. I have learned 3 important things. 1) how to use Tom and that you can turn down orders he brings you. 2) that you don't need to keep the fish you caught and the difference between the rings after you catch a fish. 3) and last, prepare and how to accomplish TT II.

I would like to request your friend on GC Cathy, if that is alright. I am a new player, just started a few weeks ago,lol.
I get really frustrated because my money is too low and so are my diamonds-and my barn and silo is full. Seems like I
will never get anywhere at this rate. I sell off everything I make, practically. Is this the way all players start out. Truly Frustrated but trying to have patience and fun with it!

Hmmm. I will have to try that. I have noticed after many farms visited in a row, some with locked boxes, which I turn down, there will be an open box, so I always search for boxes. I figure there is some ratio of locked to unlocked boxes to satisfy before there is an unlocked one.

Does the box follow you to each successive farm you visit? If so, that would probably yield more unlocked boxes if there is a ratio because I don't find a locked box on every farm the way I am doing it.

Yeah, just tap somewhere on the farm behind the window showing the toolbox. Basically anywhere EXCEPT the "X". The toolbox will stay there on the ground instead of sinking into the earth. Then go to another farm, and look for the tool box and try again.

Or, you can just reload the farm you are already on my tapping their icon in the friend bar.

Once you get the box open, you will need to back to your own farm and "do" some stuff. Either harvest crops or fruit, or pick up some completed items. Otherwise new tool boxes won't appear again. But once they do you can keep this going for as long as you are interested, so long as you are patient with your tapping. It's kind of like wheating in that it is tedious and requires constant interaction, but yields good results if you stick with it.

The downside to this is that many tool boxes will just contain coins - which many players don't need. But the good news is that you can get diamonds and vouchers from toolboxes - which you cannot get from wheating.

Yeah so cool! Since knowing that I haven't paid diamonds to open those boxes. My best tip would be learn from your elders. I've learned from them so much reading the threads n thank them for all the hard work they do to keep us updated and in the know of hay day.

I've repeated this over so many times and in so many different ways since May that I've decided on the following to be my "stock" reply to this query from now on. (saves on typing):

Most red toolboxes will be locked with random ones opening. It's the luck of the die. Here are a few tips for toolboxes to increase your chances of success:

1) On YOUR farm: Tap the X if the box is locked and it will borrow underground and often reappear and may just be unlocked this time. Sometimes, it will reappear twice. The toolbox generator works a bit differently on your farm than on other's farms and won't shut down when you X out.

2) On ANOTHER's farm: NEVER click the X...doing so shuts down the toolbox generator for a time. ALWAYS click OUTSIDE the menu anywhere. This will close the menu without shutting down the toolbox generator, so you'll continue to get one on each farm you visit. If you X out, the box burrows underground and the generator takes a while to reset, which could be anywhere from 5-30 minutes.

3) I you do get lucky to find an unlocked box, be sure to return to your own farm for just a few minutes. Go fishing, collect finished production, farm a bit, whatever. Collecting from an unlocked box, shuts down the generator for a few moments while it "reloads". This way, you'll be assured of finding a box on each and every farm you visit and have more chances to catch unlocked ones.

If you have trouble finding the red box, keep an eye out for the sparkles that spurt out now and then that indicate where it's hiding. If you still can't find it, try refreshing the farm you are visiting and it will move, hopefully someplace more visible.

Sometimes, on a crowded farm, the toolbox will reappear in basically the same spot as it doesn't have much room to roam. If you find the box locked on such a farm, you can refresh the farm over and over, bringing the box back over and over to basically the same spot so you don't have to scrounge all over looking for it. Eventually, it will open. Return to your farm, go back to this farm, and repeat. Sometimes, this can be easier, especially if you are new and have few friends, than going from farm to farm. Just be warned that this sometimes isn't that simple as the boxes can choose the favorite place to hide amongst the fruit trees.

The same can be done on a relatively empty farm that has been cleared of trees. The boxes are so easy to find.

I've been doing this for ages, but on Greg's farm. I actually made a tally of what I'd had out of the boxes in an afternoon. I was amazed. I think the most amount of tapping & refreshing was 21 times ( for 1 box). Yes, I actually started counting how many times I had to tap ( how sad) before it opened:cool:

Yeah! I just got back from my red box bonanza! I have been doing things the hard way, tapping the x and waiting for a new box to appear. using the tap near locked boxes method i just got lots and lots of coins, but also nails, duct tape, and, incredibly, a much coveted bolt! What a great thread. Thanks!

I too, got it from this very helpful forum, I used to spend very hard worked for diamonds on the boxes for not very much at times, until I read the forum :( Haven't looked back since :)

The sugar tip was actually quite simple, I can't find the original but it involved opening up all your slots and then alternating brown and white during the day and loading up syrups during the night. The OP suggested not using any sugar for 24 hours til you build up stock, but after that you should have a good supply if you run your sugar mill continuously. It worked for me, sugar boats hold no fear any more! I have adapted it a little for dairy, but possibly due to my small barn size it's not quite as smooth yet.

Yes, you can really rake in the items. I did this for about forty minutes tonight (watching a movie with my boys) and I earned: 3 planks, 1 nails, 1 saw, 1 bolt, 2 green vouchers, and 4056 coins.

Since you have to return to your farm in between each chest, I usually start a little wheating while I'm there. It takes about two minutes to get the box to open, which is just enough time for your wheat to grow back and get harvested again. Synergy!

I also recommend using Greg's farm as your recurring farm of choice. I find that more often than not, the box will appear very close to his farm house, making finding it a lot easier.

This thread is working just like I hoped it would. Lots of tips shared, lots of new stuff to try. I did not know about getting the box to open without paying. Have bookmarked that page so I can practice. Also, great tip about working the sugar mill. I do always load up all the slots on lots of machines before sleeping, but duh, hadn't put it together that I should choose the things that take the longest to make to make overnight.

Another tip I got from another thread is not to cling to every single land, barn, silo expansion item indefinitely. That just fills up the barn so you have even less room to build inventory of stuff you make. It's definitely more of a juggling act when you are 1st starting out, but it gets easier and easier.

i learned on here to keep machines running non stop, either for stuff to sell or to have some basic inventory on hand to fill orders quicker. I sell a lot of chicken feed in sets of 6 at full price, because the ckn pen holds 6chickens and we all have chickens! So again, a lot of farmers starting out will snap up chicken feed because so many things you make need eggs. And those busy hens seem always hungry.

This game is so simple and yet so complex...no wonder it lures us in and gets its hooks into us! I totally love it, there's always something else to learn, something else to master!

Gosh, I'm happy my tip about the mystery boxes has been so helpful, and thanks to those who explained it even more fully. Learned this tip ages ago and glad to pass it on to our newer players out there!

Here's another little tip. When some of your bushes are dead (like the coffee beans), don't cut them down but move them to the squares directly behind your house. Can't remember exactly, but I think there are 6 of them? That way you won't lose something important there in case you "drop" it accidentally behind the house. Having the bushes there prevents anything else from settling in those spots and you'll never even see them. Saves on axes too!

I'm indecisive so I have a few!

• deleting ridiculous truck orders - if it's under 600 xp I most likely delete it, unless it's easy items.
• cheap wheat is cheap for a reason

Oh boy Cathy! you shouldn't have gotten me started, but this is a great thread, and helpful to lots of newer players out there. A boat tip for newbies. It might seem kind of obvious, but it took me awhile to figure this out. This works well before work or bed! If you've got a difficult boat coming and your supplies are low on the items required to fill it, load up your machines, get your farm in order and just close the game, even if it's just minutes before the boat is due to arrive. When the game is shut down the boat timer doesn't start until you open it up again, but your machines continue to chug along and produce those items in your queue. Once you re-open your game and your boat arrives, you will have the full time in which to fill the order. This is especially helpful for those dreaded sugar and dairy boats, if you decide to fill them and not just send them down the river empty. Most neighbours refuse to help you out on these, so you're on your own.

Yes, but you have to close the app completely. HD continues to run in the background unless you close it completely.

In iOS 6, close Hay Day, tap the home button twice to bring up a listing on the bottom of your screen of all apps running in the background, press and hold any app until they all show a red circle with a white minus (-) icon, press the red circle on the Hay Day app (this will stop HD from running in the background by closing it completely), press the home button again to exit the background listing, and reopen Hay Day.

I don't have iOS 7 so I'm repeating this from a friend who kindly contributed the information. In iOS 7, tap twice on the home button to bring up the list of apps running in the background to the bottom of the screen, tap and swipe UP the app you want to close (in this case, Hay Day), exit the background listing, and reopen Hay Day.

When you reopen HD, the paper will be refreshed and you don't have to wait the 3 minutes that you would if you kept the app open.

This trick also works to keep your boat from coming in while you are sleeping or otherwise away from your game. Completely close the app, and your boat won't come in until you log in. Everything else, machines and such, will continue to run so production is not interrupted.

Thanks, Cricks. That is good to know. I have never done the paper thing. Hope it is at least half as wonderful as the red box trick.

Another way to refresh the newspaper quickly is by having multiple devices for the same farm. For example, I have my farm on both my phone and iPad. When I log into one device, the other logs out.

So I can have both in front of me, and go from one to the other. With each reload I get a fresh set of ads and can quickly scan for something I need, then reload on the other device, and repeat as needed.

With the longer producing items like strawberries and tomatoes best time to plant is before going to bed so they're ready to harvest when waking up.

There's a lot of great tips and tricks going around on the forum! I pity my FB friends who obviously has no clue that they can send away difficult boats. LOL!

One of my favorite tips that no one had mentioned yet is how to not waste precious barn space to hold mining equipment without picking up ore. Make sure your barn is completely full and wait until you have chickens, cows, etc. ready to harvest. After throwing in something in the mine, harvest an egg to fill up the barn again. Continue to mine, harvest, mine, harvest etc. That way you throw in all the equipment without having to pick up ore.

If you are willing to pay the 3 diamonds to open a mystery box that contains something you want, here's how to peek inside without loosing your diamonds. Tap on the pay 3 diamonds bar. The box opens so you can see what it is. If you want it, take it and you will have paid your diamonds. If you don't want it, double click the home button. Close out the hay day app according to your operating system. Then reopen. You still have your diamonds. Be careful and focused when you do this. I have lost diamonds on unwanted items about three times out of the 2 hundred or so times I've run this trick. Keep your hands away from the screen after you have tapped the pay button. Click decisively on the home button. Good trick if you are looking for that last elusive bolt for your barn.

you can also do this by switching to airplane mode. you'll have about 20 seconds before the game tells you it's lost connection. that way you wont have lost any diamonds on accident if it doesn't work out.

cheddar's method works too, if you have multiple devices. but the way i meant is after you're done searching through your newspaper and have bought all the goodies, lock your device for around 10 seconds and then unlock it again. the game will refresh it's self and you'll have a new set of ads.

Definitely the best for me was to learn to cast off boats and bin bad truck orders. Since doing that, I make more money, am a little less stressed and level up a lot slower so the coins are in the bank ready for when new machines become available.

Now, if only my barn were bigger, my stress levels would be much lower!

- stockpile products (preparation for TT3)

- how to get gold voucher aka tell me what is the colour of my voucher before I send the truck

Yes, I discovered the joy of using Greg's farm about a week ago. There are only about 4 areas that the box will ever appear so it makes it very easy to find - near/behind the house, on the road, by the wool machine and by the gazebo thing ;)

Hi Macpuddleduck, your not just a good neighbour you're a mirror image of how I farm. I too close down at night so I have ample for my boat order in the morning. This is the only thing that keeps me from my farm

Haven't blitzed the red box for ages( what with new stuff) so decided to CTRB ( chase the red box) this morning.My rewards were

19 boxes would have cost 57 diamonds to open. All while doing kids breakfast, bedrooms & showers. Yes my iPad is strapped to me ! Lol:cool:

Hi, does this trick still work? I used to do it all the time and only accepted the item if it was diamonds (yes, I'm a greedy one, lol). I found out about making sure u don't tap any other part of the screen the hard way:rolleyes: But I want to know when last u tried this trick. I noticed after the Halloween update, I lost 2 sets of diamonds trying this and I was careful! My sister that used to use the trick also noticed the same thing after the update. And I haven't had the nerve to try again. So if anyone can still confirm that this bug/trick hasn't been sorted out, I'll be glad to know so I can resume my diamond hunt. Have 14 diamonds at the mo and I'm itching to employ Tom:o

I'm not sure it could be shared freely on forum like the mystery box trick. I add a youtube link. If any Mod or Moderator find it inappropriate, remove it then.

In short, you stop Hay Day to tell the server what you are doing. Don't forget to force quit the app BEFORE you switch on the connection.

The mystery box tricks worked fantastically this morning!! Many thanks! Got diamonds and lots of usefulexpansion stuff. But since 1 hour, no box would open anymore. When I had counted 48 attemps, I forced atopped the app and will start all over again. The counter might freeze from time to time?

Btw, cant do it with Gregs farm because the app still freezes when I use friend list to direct to a farm (since Halloween and got worse with winter), ipad2, but I choose a pretty empty farm from friends calling help.

I have 2 friends who have filled every single square inch of their farms, so chests appear only on the driveway. They are my "go-to" farms for chests, and as both are at the extreme left of my friend bar they are very easy to get to as well! :D

Have been trying it most of the day, very successful.

This morning it was about every 6th box, but now I am visiting farms and about every 20/25th box is an opener:( just me or has something changed to change the frequency??

I've repeated this over so many times and in so many different ways since May that I've decided on the following to be my "stock" reply to this query from now on. (saves on typing):

Most red toolboxes will be locked with random ones opening. It's the luck of the die. Here are a few tips for toolboxes to increase your chances of success:

1) On YOUR farm: Tap the X if the box is locked and it will borrow underground and often reappear and may just be unlocked this time. Sometimes, it will reappear twice. The toolbox generator works a bit differently on your farm than on other's farms and won't shut down when you X out.

2) On ANOTHER's farm: NEVER click the X...doing so shuts down the toolbox generator for a time. ALWAYS click OUTSIDE the menu anywhere. This will close the menu without shutting down the toolbox generator, so you'll continue to get one on each farm you visit. If you X out, the box burrows underground and the generator takes a while to reset, which could be anywhere from 5-30 minutes.

3) I you do get lucky to find an unlocked box, be sure to return to your own farm for just a few minutes. Go fishing, collect finished production, farm a bit, whatever. Collecting from an unlocked box, shuts down the generator for a few moments while it "reloads". This way, you'll be assured of finding a box on each and every farm you visit and have more chances to catch unlocked ones.

If you have trouble finding the red box, keep an eye out for the sparkles that spurt out now and then that indicate where it's hiding. If you still can't find it, try refreshing the farm you are visiting and it will move, hopefully someplace more visible..................same can be done on a relatively empty farm that has been cleared of trees. The boxes are so easy to find.

Like many, learned something new here today! I'm a level 62 player and had no knowledge of the tip outlined above by Cricks. I've burned lots of diamonds on locked boxes. I must admit, some times I can be a bit impatient - it's great to know I have an option!!

The rate of success seems pretty random. I've had it take more than 50 taps/reloads and I've had it take 2. I don't know if it really helps, or if its all mental, but if I get to 20+ and have not opened the box I move to a new farm.

Just ran a little experiment with the locked box thing. I accidentally used diamonds twice (old habits are hard to break) but didn't include that in my tally. Here's what I collected in a 30 min window:

It has been working just fine for me. I just tried it again to make sure. I don't think it's a bug. It's just that when you shut down the game before you have confirmed the transaction, it is voided.

I have found this to take a really long time to get the boxes to open. It hasn't been worth the effort for me. I find that working the fields constantly repays my time better. It doesn't have to be just wheat.

I agree, it can be tedious. And it depends on what you are looking for. If you want expansion materials, or mining tools you are better off harvesting. But you can't get vouchers or diamonds that way.

Good point. I haven't been playing long enough to want lots of vouchers. Just the purple ones to buy more big trees! Love the trees more than the pets. Hehe.

Can you elaborate on the fishing tip. I tried to find fish with circles after I read this. How many times do you have to cast a lure to attract one of these? Do you need a particular lure?

BonRae, you are not the only high level player who didn't know. I've been passing the word around on this since late May or early June, but it continually went unnoticed except by a very few until recently. It's such a great thing, I guess folks just didn't believe me because I was a newbie. I don't know.

I learned quickly from the great folks on this forum, not to X out the box, so you could refresh the farm and try again. I While playing around with that I discovered the pattern of the red toolbox "regeneration" by returning to one's own farm shortly after I started playing back in mid May and posted about it several times on threads asking what others had made of it, and if they could give more details to help me understand it better. I was thoroughly confused why no one had ever pointed it out before nor why no one was confirming my posts. I couldn't figure out why it worked for me when no one else acknowledged it and began to believe I had a lucky glitch in my game.

I was just about to stop posting on it for fear that SC would fix my precious glitch, when one person did respond and she told me the part about how it will reappear on your own farm (wish I could remember her name). I tried her discovery and it worked for me, and she tried mine and it worked for her, so I now knew it wasn't a glitch. After a couple of days of experimenting to be sure of the pattern of regeneration, I started posting about the toolbox "algorithm" (as I was referring to it for a while) and how to keep it from shutting down, whenever folks asked how to find more or complained they couldn't find any.

Still, surprisingly few people seemed interested or even paid attention until September when I posted a shorter version of the one above several times. I only put it all into the full version above a few weeks ago. I guess putting it all together that way was more comprehensible than the way I was posting prior. Anyway, since about September, word has spread a bit and now, with CheddarLimbo reviving it, it's spreading much, much more as are all the great tips on this wonderful thread.

Just look at this thread and see how many have, in just a few hours, are reaping the benefits of sharing any and everything discovered with each other. It's like that old shampoo commercial, where Susan told two people and they told two people and so on and so on. LOL

It's truly amazing how spotting one little pattern, telling someone else who tells someone else, and so on can help so many to improve their enjoyment of HD. I can't wait to try some of the tips on here, especially the airplane mode, even though I'm still not quite sure how that works but I'll figure it out. It would be interesting to track down the first person who figured this out and find out how they did. I mean, who'd think of airplane mode? Same with all the great tips I've learned here. :) So much brainstorming goes on here to. Experiment with bits and pieces to find out patterns and algorithms....we've got some great threads going on trying to track fish catching patterns and how to up your chances of getting a gold voucher. Gotta love this forum and the fantastic folks who roam it,

Nice!! Was that refreshing and reopening a single box on the same farm over and over or is that your tally from boxes on different farms within 30 minutes? I've found, personally, a much higher success rate of boxes opening by going to other farms than refreshing the same one. So I usually scroll through my neighbors several times a day or through the DD farms one after another.

I often get the impression that hitting the same box over and over, takes longer to open each time...like it needs a rest or something...or maybe that's just me getting bored of the repetition, which could be very likely because, very occasionally, the opposite seems true and that refreshing the same one makes it open more quickly for 3-4 times before it stops opening altogether and I have to move to a different farm or wait a while before returning.

What is your opinion with the experiment you just did. Any preferences or it doesn't matter?

When you fish, you'll notice that there is a circle within a larger circle. You must keep the fish within the inner circle while the larger outer circle gets smaller and smaller. When the two circles overlap, your fish is caught.

The smaller the inner circle when you cast, the more valuable the fish caught. I understand the inner circle for the gold lure is pretty darn tiny. So, if you are using say a purple lure, yet the fish can also be caught by a green, you want to make sure that, when you cast, you have the smallest circle possible before you reel it in. If you don't have the smallest, just let the fish go and cast again so you don't lose your lure.

I'm not the most patient fisherman so I've not tried all the fishing tips. But another that lots of folks swear by is how feisty the fish is. The more of a struggle it gives you, the heavier it is or the more valuable a type.

Check out the guide to fishing and there should be some posts from folks who experimented and their findings. Also you can do a search for fishing and see what turns up. I know there have been lots of tips on how to get the most out of fishing. Maybe even in recent threads from the current global event.

For me definitely the info about casting pff boats and trashing truck orders. I used to think that I *had* to complete them all or else there would be some kind of penalty (lol!). Also, the fishing guide has been really helpful. Not too crazy about fishing, but I like a new fish and their pic for my album once in awhile :)

There are other things, but I forget. Ooooh, the TT help guide. I only did it two weeks or so ago. That guide was super helpful. I did it by myself, without help, just following the guidelines to a T.

Hi GladeMaid, Meonhoc is referring to the spreadsheet she started which details what voucher one could get before delivering truck orders for jewelry/bars. Any one can input data into this spreadsheet. So basically, the way it works, when u get a jewelry/bar order, u check the spreadsheet first. If it's gonna turn up a voucher u don't want (like a green :)), u trash it and wait for another order. Conversely, if the order is NOT on the spreadsheet, u can decide to send your truck anyway after keeping details of the coins/xp and once u get your voucher, u go back to the spreadsheet and enter your data! It's a really really useful tool, I use it every single day:D. Personally, I wish we could bump it up everyday, not many ppl seem to know about it. Anyway, here is the thread, hope it helps!

Edit: forgot to mention that sometimes a voucher may be reported as a particular color, but when u deliver it, u get a diff result. Yeah, that happens sometimes. May be related to player's level or something or the other. But generally, more often than not, I get the color voucher that has been previously reported...

A really useful tip (Thanks to Perky for this one!) is to keep at least one of YOUR follower (who you follow) slots open in case you find a great deal, but dont have the room for it ATM. Follow the bargain farm, return to your farm, make the needed room, then, having already added the bargain farm to your list, you can quickly return to it and buy the treasure you found, then you can unfollow the farm.

I can't tell you how many items I lost out on because by the time I finished dumping things to make space, the DD had refreshed and I couldn't return to that particular farm. Since Perky shared this tip in another thread, being able to get back to those great deals has gone through the roof!! Just last night, I was able to snap up several BEM/SEMs that I would have otherwise had to wave bye-bye to!

BTW - one thing I haven't seen mentioned here that is useful to know - if you tap on Tom's yellow discount ballon when he lets it go it will burst and drop a nice gift for you. My last gift was 50 XP. Loved that one!
