Memory Issues
I have been running into major device lag on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4s and have isolated the problem to CoC using the debug logs. There seems to be 2 issues in play. It seems CoC along with IOS 7 on these devices consume more memory than what is available. I also suspect there are memory leaks in CoC as the game gets slower and slower over time until it actually crashes out on me. This gets really bad really fast when watching replays especially.
The memory issue is so bad it causes things like iCloud backups to fail and lose its authentication. This causes constant verify your iCloud password prompts.

The iCloud verification is a known issue with ios 7 as I suffer it. It has nothing to do with coc. There is now ios 7.0.4 update and at the moment I've not seen a request for the backup password.
if you are on ios7 try the update and see what happens.

I think the fact of the matter is older devices do not play well with iOS 7. They simply are too underpowered for it.
I have iOS7 and an iPhone 4s and it's a real drag. Apple already had to cripple a number of iOS 7 features on older devices for performance reasons, realistically they probably should have made iOS 7 require iphone 5 and ipad 3.
Of course that's hard to do when they for some unknown reason still sell the iPad 2. God knows why a person would buy it, considering the mere $100 price difference and how vastly inferior it is to an iPad Air.

As dahimi said, the older devices just don't have the RAM and processing power needed. My iphone 5 on ios 6 can run low on RAM and freeze up, but I attribute that to being JB and not CoC. However on my iPad 2 running ios 7 I have lag sometimes, but it isn't that bad and usually it is not in CoC. This is probally due to the older processor as it is not JB.

I suffer too
I've got an IPhone 4S and I suffer too - playing Hay Day.
Just loading 7.0.4 now, I have no idea if the bug is fixed, but I'm hoping it is!
To repeat the bug seems to be worse with IPhone 4S running memory intensive apps (like Hay Day).
Symptoms - random iCloud settings turning off (like Contacts, Calendar, Find My IPhone)
The occasional prompt for iCloud Password,
And the occasional complete iCloud settings removal.
Fingers crossed. Will advise in a few days if it seems to be fixed.

Bumping this as I've made a thread on the COC Reddit about this problem a few weeks ago and it is STILL not solved. I've also linked to the apple discussion thread where numerous people are having this issue. It's not specifically related to COC or HayDay, but every person who was posting in that thread had one of those games installed.
supercell, is it possible to make a less graphic intensive version for older iOS devices?
the only way I've found to get around this is force close all my apps before opening COC and then when I'm finished make sure I force close COC. Otherwise iCloud crashes and I lose all my contacts and emails until I manually go into settings and turn icloud syncing back on. Major pain.

And here's the Apple discussion thread about it: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5335046
please can someone from supercell reply to this? It's a pretty widespread issue as lots of people don't have the newest iPhones & iPads.
one more thing, I've found you can make iOS7 less laggy on your iPhone by going to Settings>General>Accessibilty>Reduce Motion> and turn it on
