Quick questioon about mining

So, when my barn is full, I can blow up the mine and store those masses of ore outside without being a burden for my barn storage.

But what about the diamonds? Can I selectively pick them up or do I still have to dig them out by pulling ore into my barn? This would mean that I still have to take hundreds of ore and could leave only three or four ores max outside when I want those diamonds?

It's been my experience with my mine that I have to dig the diamonds out by picking up the ores on top of them. The diamonds act as just another item in the piled up stack.
