I don't get why there would be a barrack in the funneled compartments instead of mines or pumps to attract goblins AND giants.

Now I feel insulted...
Your choice between mines and pumps or barracks. But realize if pumps are inside then gobs will destroy outside first then go in for inside collectors then for storages. With barracks then the gobs do a ring around the rosey around the base. I have collectors inside though just havent updated pic...

He probably read mufasa's guide on base designs in which he says to put barracks in funnels. It's a matter of personal preference.
