I regret not completing my Turbo Trucker 2 and Turbo Trucker 3 achievements immediately at lower levels since it gets harder and harder at higher levels.
I also regret expanding my land and not saving some rocks, trees and water puddles. They look so good on people's farms who saved them, you can't buy these rocks or puddles at higher levels.
I also regret trading all my barn expansion tools to get land expansion tools because I wanted to expand my land immediately, I later realized it's easier to come across land expansion tools and having a larger barn/silo is key to playing this game.
I would agree with these two although I eventually did TT3 after I had the candy machine without too much difficulty.
I regret that I did not find the forum until after I had been farming for several months - would have made life easier to know that I could find out what was on the next boat and that I could send boats on...oh and many other useful bits of information.
And bad mistakes, I made a few, but...

Cutting down the trees on the other side of the water. Also, opening too few or too many production queues for certain items early on.
I regret downloading the darn app at all... So many wasted hours.
But it's too late now! I'm in it for the long haul.
I'll tell you what I don't regret...not buying every animal just because I could. It's much easier to maintain a few than too many.
I never opened my mine and from what I can tell, it didn't hurt my game at all.
I kept 'pets' to a minimum. 2 dogs and 2 horses.
And I agree with the thought that it's more important to expand your barn more than your land. I suggest getting a nice inventory and help others than to focus on clear cutting/expanding your land.
Whatever you decide, enjoy your farm!
My regret was cutting down all my native trees :( :( on my farm and across the river.
