This is the source of some of their very own problems, though. Without cheap shields and such, how would the gaps become so large between players with identical bases (all maxxed) and theoretically comparable skill? Yes, there are variations in skill and playing time that could cause players to get ahead even without these tactics, but there is a newfound fluidity that should prevent such large, insurmountable gaps from emerging.
Now that revenges are effectively gone for these players, they have a harder time getting their cheap shields and some of their cups. The focus now is on whether this change is "fair" to those players, and why some of them are threatening to quit over it.
In my opinion, this is a very welcome change. You had players creating inctricate webs of shielding each other in order to stamp out threats from lower/mid champion players. These practices can be viewed as anti-competitive, but again, they were allowed. It all disappeared in a day, though. They woke up one morning and it was largely gone. Their methods rendered obselete, and they are suddenly forced into the same system that everyone else is.
I don't see how this is unfair to them. They used these tactics to create a buffer between themselves and their challengers, and now they are being forced to adapt and defend their spots like everyone else. I have seen some people claim that there should have been a warning to let them know about this change, but that doesn't make much sense to me. It is a change designed to take out a set of tactics that SC has seemingly deemed inappropriate for their game. Why announce a crackdown on malicious activities? Just do it, which is exactly what SC did.
Now, we see those top players faced with the decision to adapt or quit, with many choosing tha latter so it seems. The top spots are supposed to represent the best, most hardcore clashers in the game, and some of them seem unwilling to invest the time, energy, and cash to claim that spot legitimately.
No matter what they ultimately decide, there will be players who do want those spots, and they will take them if/when they have the chance.
Finally, I want to adress how some top players have chose to voice their disagreement. Several top clans have changed their descriptions and there is even a clan for soon to be retireees, but what else are they doing? Are they on FB protesting? Are they emailing SC with their complaints? Well, they certainly aren't making too much of an effort here on the forums. What I mean is that there isn't many of them here arguing their case, not that the few that are here are doing anything wrong.
If they want to see changes, they have to speak up and take it right to SC. You can't send a message with a clan description; you have to make well thought out and rational arguments and present them to SC and the general CoC populatin. If they do that, maybe they get enough support to change the system into something that makes everyone happier. Until then, I can't see SC going out of their way to change anything for them.
