Person A could be attacking person B's base, who is attacking person C's base. This would make legendary much more competitive too; since going on a raid would represent a gamble that the person that may attack you is at higher trophies, or that you get more stars and hence more cups than them (incidentally cups should be awarded non-linearly in terms of stars...something like 1 star - 5 cup, 2 stars - 15 cups, 3 stars - 45 cups).
