Functional and 'natural' farms

Hello,

a couple of days ago I came across a level 50+ farm that had no decorations and a lot of the native trees. Sadly, I forgot to take a screenshot. Oh and the owner obviously decided against expanding their land as at such a higher level they would certainly have gotten enough materials to expand even a couple spots (fishing areas were fully expanded though). The farm didn't look cramped or anything, all was nicely arranged but with next to none decoratons (there may have been some lupines out).

I loved it. Does anyone here have a farm like that? We had threads like this for the Halloween displays, now the fall displays, but who has natural, functional farms? Or who has stumbled upon such farms and taken screenshots? Post pics, please :)

I have a few decorations, mostly won with the WOF or gotten with gift cards. I like it when the farm is functional.

I am all for functional farms! I cut very few of the original trees, so the fall foliage on my farm looks wonderful right now. My machines are clustered together in one little area (very convenient when you play on an iPhone). I did do the land expansion, much later than it was available, to make additional space for fruit trees and to get the achievement associated with land expansion. The gnomes and topiaries that I won are mostly in storage, but there are a few dropped behind the house and barn to prevent the treasure chests from popping up in inconvenient places. I have a like minded neighbor who was for a long time calling his farm the "anti-decoration" farm.

Oo that's a good idea. If I get anything ugly with gift cards I'm going to do that.

The farms I like best have pretty minimal decorative items - they just make the most of the trees and bushes in fruit.

I, too, have a functional farm with few decorations and none of the gaudy stuff, but I cleared my land as soon as I could because I like the decorative look of fruit trees in flower and fruit, and my trees and shrubs are in various stages at all times. I found the trees that were already there were always in the way of what I wanted to do and, being the control freak I am, I wanted to place my things MY way. :cool:

My machines are all close together too so I can have the business side of the farm whereas the other side is for relaxing, enjoying the lake and ponds, and smelling all those flowers in bloom. :D

I use my trees and bushes for decorating too. I have a picket fence around my backyard. At one end I have a bench with a small pond. I have a dog and cat house there. The rest of the backyard has different trees as decor.

I have a white stone fence around the perimeter of my farm. On the outside of the fence I have placed various bushes and I have done the same along the inside of the fence.

I have an opening in the front of my fence where I placed my Kiosk. I have surrounded it on two sides with Apple trees. On both sides of it I placed Lupines and Gazanias. I did place a small stone path from the road to the Kiosk.

I have all my animals on one side of the farm and their pens are surrounded by berry bushes.

My machines are on one side of my farm also. Berry bushes run up the middle of my machines. I have placed a flower next to most of my machines for color.

My barn and silo are on the opposite side of the farm nestled next to trees.

The smelters and jewelry maker are on each side of the mine with bushes and trees next to them.

Oops ... almost forgot about my horse. Between my backyard and animal pens I did build a stone fence with an opening on one side where I placed the horse stall. It has a pond and a couple of trees there.

I still have plenty of green yard because I don't want my farm to be crowded.

I have seen some beautiful farms with various decorations, but for me simple is the best.

Sounds beautiful, sonnyshine! I, too, separate my machines and animal pens with fruit producers to maximize space so that I can have some green space. It's the same in real life - I need a little "visual elbow room" in my gardens, though I wish I could grow the same fruits in my Texas heat. :)

I understood far to late that it is beautiful to leave the original trees and ponds. Besides that I love the variety, it is nice to visit foreign farms via DD.

I use fruit trees and bushes as decoration too and hardly anything else and I too have a work zone and a relaxing space. I don't hate decor, but I prefer a wood stack over a gnome etc. :D

I have cut down as few trees as possible because I couldn't bear to at first. Now I lose one occasionally if I am too absent minded and swipe wrong. It is a little harder to farm amongst them because you keep getting saws popping up. Luckily you can buy them again in the store when you get enough vouchers. I like the dog I got but would rather buy trees first before more pets.

Oh. And my gc is fireartisans if anyone wants to friend me.

When I started the game way back... I cut down trees because I thought I would need room, and I've regretted it since. But I'm glad they offer trees to rebuy. Wished they could have been coloured for fall like the original ones - I'm always jealous when I see other's farms with the red trees.

I don't like all the topiaries and huge gold statues or the big fountains or anything. I have the little bugs and gnomes placed in my field though, and I like the flowers, so they are placed around the paddocks and stuff. The only over the top thing I have is the swimming pool. I purchased the large pond with the bridge over it and immediately regretted that, so it's in storage. I liked the halloween stuff, so I bought that, but it's now in storage as well as the Christmas stuff.

I was one of the ones way back who suggested a tractor, and I was THRILLED when they finally offered it, only to find that it's not to scale with the rest of the buildings, so I never did purchase it because it doesn't make sense to me. I'm still sad about that. :(

I like to think I could live on my farm and be comfortable. :)

That's EXACTLY how I did my farm - the way I would like to have it IRL. Animals, outhouse (because it's so darned CUTE) and most production machines downwind, bakery close to the house, bench and pond by the river, and pretty trees and flowers all around. A few little decorations (white picket fencing, a couple of topiaries and the cute little girl gnome), but that's it. Calm and peaceful, my little cyber escape. :)

When we first started farming, we were all about the infrastructure -- just the farm, ma'am. No frills, no decorations. We did have fun with what few fields we had -- making words and a cat face, paw prints (back when we were longing for pets) and etc. We got a few flowerpots for the house and made a little boat landing thingy. I think Peachie stuck a few heart topiaries around, but that was it.

We also cut down all our trees so we could have room for our field art. We blew up all our boulders just for fun. We drained our ponds to watch the frogs hop out (we bought more ponds that we can move around, frog fanciers! We took care of our amphibians :) )

Now after months of play we have a lot of WOF decorations in storage, so one day we got them out and made a Garden O' Tacky. Then went for the King Frog (FINALLY got him!) and made a wedding chapel.

We stored the wedding chapel for the Fair, but we love KF so much he guards the barn.

We won a boy fountain, but it has never seen the light of day on our farm -- and most likely never will, unless we are making another thing for a laugh.

I would have loved to see the garden O' Tacky :)
And I have 2 or 3 boy fountains in storage now, plus many topiaries and other assorted ♥♥♥♥. I'm so glad it's not taking up room in the barn! lol

My farm is functional as well. The only thing I continued after the Halloween update is I kept a cemetery in honor of those I've lost. It's in the upper right corner and I kept the wrought iron fencing from the Halloween update and the tombstones, but I stored the rest in storage. I wanted the cemetery to look tranquil so I kept the fountains and the gazebo there and bought a few trees. Sadly I got rid of the trees not realizing how much I would want them later on. But I did buy some and I feel better having them. I love the pine trees. I'm not big on the gaudy decorations so I keep them in storage.

Sadly I cut down most of my trees...if I could have moved them around I would have kept them. I do wish I'd kept a few more of them though. I'm mostly using my fruit trees for decoration.

As far as decorations, I have very few. I have some that I've won and have purchased a few fences and some of the Halloween stuff, but not much else. I am constantly in need of more coins so I've decided to hold off on decorating until I'm in that spot where I have more coins than I know what to do with. Then I can have fun decorating the way I want.

<sub>I enjoy seeing how people have done their farms, and like every style that looks deliberate. On my farm, decorative items are mostly hidden. Flowers are under and behind things, and are frequently only visible when a tree moves with the wind. Anything with a head I have tried to arrange so only the head peeks out. Many farm machines are hidden in the trees. I, too, kept the tombstone in memory of loved ones lost, but otherwise, I keep decorations kind of low key.

O those are cute! haha However we both know we've seen WAY more tacky than that.
I wished I could have saved the screenshot I took of 'tractor fountain' farm. EVERY inch of landspace was covered with bikes, tractors, fountains, topiaries, gazebos and other assorted brickabrack. I couldn't even find the machines for all the tractors.
I've even seen a farm where every square inch was covered with barrels. Barrels.

Hiya Goobster! I noticed your revamped cemetery. It's beautiful! You have a real eye for placing your items. Your whole farm is tranquil. Well designed, neighbour. :)

i agree with, Perky, that boy fountain decoration is awful! It kinda blends in well amongst my machines, so it's staying...for now. Otherwise, for me, I'm leaving my few Halloween decs until the new update. Hoping to replace then with winter goodies! :)

I saw the barrel farm! We play on my iPhone, so we thought at first glance that the barrels were piles of manure.

You are right -- they were EVERYWHERE! Thousands of them! Must have cost a fortune. We have 3, but only because of an errant cofarmer finger. Maybe we will get them out at Christmas - barrels of Christmas Cheer (hic!) Rum for the Rum Balls ha ha

Lol, love erverone's posts. I would love rum balls and maybe gingerbread made in the bakery so it is doable even at low levels.

He's a big guy - bet he can't hold his liquor. He'll be a sloppy drunk, making awkward passes at the pretty girl, who will coyly bat her eyes at him, never letting on that she is out of his league.

I love my farm. I created it as I'd hope to have it in real life. I use trees to disguise my production machines, didn't overwhelm myself with too many animals, keep the decorations to a minimum, and generally just daydream and wish I could live there :) If I knew how to screen shot, I'd have included it here

Has anyone seen the outhouse farms? The ones that have dozens of outhouses arranged to look like something else. It's very creative, but as someone who actually grew up with the reality of these things and still do when camping, I just doesn't appeal to me. One farm seems to be arranged to resemble a multi storied bldg. "The Outhouse Motel"? :confused:

One of the participants here does that. It looks cool, but I can't imagine using up that much real estate with outhouses for a 'look'. People do pinwheels with the white swings too. With a fountain in the middle. Some have 5 or 6 of them.



I'm with you on the outhouse thing though. I used them growing up, and camping too. Nuh-uh!

I do, however, use one outhouse at the boat station for a storage shed (decorative only - cause hey... I DON"T WANT all that smelly fishing gear in my house! keep it in the shed dangit! ;) ), and one at the end of my laneway as a shelter for my kids to wait for the schoolbus. (I never had one of those growing up - we always froze at the end of the lane lol) I INSIST they are NOT outhouses, they are a storage shed and a shelter for my kids! So there! hahahahahaa

You are OBVIOUSLY not from Texas. ha ha ha ha ha ha

1st -- We don't freeze (well, not very often)

2nd --We don't hang out in places that come with lots of hiding spots for black widows. Nice quiet shelters with ledges and overhangs completely hidden from view-- ABSOLUTELY PERFECT if you are a BWS. Country outhouses in TX were notoriously full of them -- I'll squat on my spurs instead, thank you.

Thanks, VorAtreides! RRammie's cemetery idea took root for me and now I will always have one somewhere on the farm. I love playing with the design. I only wish that it was easier to move things around. One thing that I find so frustrating is dragging something over to another spot only to have it whip back to it's original spot because I let go too soon or whatever it is. I would rather SC make a 'design' mode where everything sort of freezes and you can just move things around without issue. I have that in other games and it's a wonderful feature.

I wish I could go back and tell myself to not cut down the native trees...

Cheddar, me too. I kept some, funnily exactly those of the pines that now have the jack-o-lantern. deco. :D

I feel my farm is very natural and functional. I'm not so sure about some of the machines we all have, don't believe most farms function with these? Anyway, I left a lot of my original trees and I am happy that I did. I have added several decorations like the gazebos, swings, bird houses and bird baths. I love the stone path and the new iron fence. I've kept most topiaries but not the giant flowers or gnomes, hate the gnomes. I do not have all of the cats and dogs and I don't want them, kind of over kill to me. The big boy fountain is awful but the tractor is awesome! I am ready for the winter decorations and I hope we have snow again!

You have a really nice farm Shealie! Seems very peaceful ... I think I'd sit on one of the benches by your pond.:):):)

I also have a functional farm. I cut most of the native trees, but still have a few. I kep one marshy area as I read that will keep the fronts under control. It's not a beautiful farm, but then again it is a farm.

Mine is mostly functional. I have my machines in the bottom left corner, most of my farm animals in the upper left corner. I seperated them with a green hedge and a path that goes from the boat to the barn and the house. My trees are in rows in the upper right corner with a hedge around them. My smelter and mills, chickens and pigs are there too. My favorite spot is the lower right corner. I have all my fields there. I have 8 different groups of fields seperated by my fruit bushes and coco trees. Beside the fields I have a area that would be pretty for a wedding then a more relaxing area. Love my farm.

nope not Texas.... Ontario Canada.

There are black widows here, but not so common - although I'm sure I saw one in our shed last year.
The extreme climate changes I'm sure affects them multiplying too rapidly :)
