What level defenses should TH7 have before going TH8

I rushed my mini to TH7...then maxed from there (Almost max Def TH9, with mid heros and DE labs left to do).

I would say max at TH7....which is sooooo easy to get gold and elixer using barch or all gobs. At TH8 I would max def and lab and BK....make sure you max BK as it will make the start of TH9 better since you'll want your AQ down the entire time until she's atleast 15.
Granted I did skip some of the Elixer labs at TH8 (Pekka, lightning)....You will have plenty of time at TH9 to upgrade those as there isn't that much Elixer items at TH9 compared to the Gold and DE upgrades/Labs.

My main is a half maxed th10 which I rushed and then slowly built-up to the point that it is no longer rushed - it's now half maxed for TH10.
My mini (fully maxed TH9 which I keep as TH9 for war) I rushed to th7, then maxed everything; then maxed th8; then th9.

Pretty much. I drop everything new, upgrade the lab and my farming troops, and get the new stuff to TH7 max equivalents, but that doesn’t take long. TH8 is one of those levels where I just don’t see the value of hanging out there for very long. I see TH6 in much the same light. I think on my last “new” game, I was at TH7 in something like 3 weeks and hit TH9 a few weeks later. I’ve gone a little slower on some of my other games, though.
