I've just opened the mine & realised that tho I've been selling explosives & shovels since I started the game I have no understanding of how they work -eg why does the shovel cause an explosion? Or maybe it didn't (in my rush to play with the mine I used all the dynamite, shovels & the other one in quick succession) but then was dissappointed because still not enough to make any bars from :-( Love love love the explosions! Will someone teach me how to work the mine please?
When you have tnt, dynamite or shovels just tap the cave and drag them there :).
After that you will receive ores, sometimes even diamond ;).
You need to place smelters to produce bars of metal. Those bars go into the jewelry hut to produce ... Guess what? You can sell products of all 3 stages whereas jewelry makes the most money. Truck orders will appear for bars and jewelry but not for ores.
Do all 3 mining tools have the same value? I mean do they all produce the same amount of ore after the explosion? How can you know what kind of ore to expect or (ore!) groan! is the result random? Thanks for taking the time to help me.

you cant predict what kind of ore you get but silver seems to be most common for me, platinuum most rare. All three explosives can result in gems or other items, while for me diamonds yield more often than other goddies. It can hapoen that you get a diamond within one or two explosions or it may need ten.
Edit: ore can easily take lots of barn space so be careful with digging for diamonds. You will need three ore to produce one bar in the smelter but production time is lengthy!
Edit of the edit: ore prices are very, very low but they sell within seconds, good way to empty barn when you dont have enough smelters
dynamite produces 2 ores, tnt 3 and a showel 4. also you can digg some diamonds from the mine from time to time :)
One more thing. Metal truck orders (bars, jewelry) give you vouchers with which you can acquire pets, decoration and lures. There is a very handy thread also with links to a form showing which voucher will be received for which order:

Thank you everyone for your help. I was wondering where all the space went from my recent barn up-grade. I'd read the values wrong eg 14/3 meant that I'd got 14 ores & only needed 3 for a bar not that I'd got 3 & needed 14 (doh!) thank you so much for your prompt and wise replies.

you read it correctly, every bar wants 3 ores to be produced
Clarification: I used to think only shovels would get diamonds, but you can actually earn diamonds with any of the explosives. I do think shovels are more LIKELY to spawn a diamond though.
I seem to get more gold ore than anything else. I wonder if each farm has a different "most like" ore, like it seems to be with the expansion materials?
