What was Clash of Clans like when it first came out?

So the question says it all... For the long time players of COC, what was Clash of clans like when it first came out? Ive only been playing since this past May, so not too long but I have definitely seen some updates. Like this past halloween one. When it first came out I think that there was only a TH 8? and no rankings? And was there such a thing like farming!? Stuff like that.
And also for all you long time players, what do you think the most major updates have been for you, and do you think for the better? Would love to hear from you long time players, or new ;p

There was a waterfall.

Really? Thats very cool. Were did it come from? Because theres like no mountain. ;)

Yep TH8 was the max town hall level. They had player rankings but no Leagues. Farming was around very early on, the game released officially in August and in October they introduced the loot penalties for attacking lower town halls. (http://forum.supercell.net/showthrea...ersion-2-73%29)

Heaps of things have gradually changed over time for the good of the game. Builders weren't required to build walls, they added that because we were able to hide all our extra gold into walls. They changed cancelling a building from full refund to 50% refund as we were able to hide our loot upgrading something then cancelling it after we were attacked. The barracks only worked off 50 troops no matter what kind so you could hide all your elixir by racking up heaps of pekka's or whatever. The army camps destroyed in battle also destroyed any troops in it. The first Halloween update removed this and it was supposed to be a feature that ended at the end of Halloween but due to overwhelming support against it being removed they left it so now your troops remain in your camps even if the camps are destroyed.

well I sure am glad they left it! Did they still have all the lab upgrades and the high power peeekkas and dragons?

Oh yeah and there was the elixir bug too. There was a period where for a while you could queue and then dequeue troops and it returned more elixir to you than you spent.

Oh and resources on the goblin maps regenerated and they had a higher payout. The last goblin map paid out 2m of each resource. They also added some of the new structures to the goblin maps such as higher level wizard towers.

No dark barracks, no spell factory. The troops were the same and went up to pekka's but obviously now there are higher levels than were when it first came out.

It was really exciting when the barbarian king update came out!

Yeah, man that sucked. You had to guess where they dropped their troops. Without knowing what they were exploiting on your base made it harder to defend and like you said the only indication were a couple of tombstones.

yea, I think the huge game-changer was this: letting your troops live after your base camps were destroyed from an attack.

Remember when you could re-sell your buildings? lol

What was the favorite troop composition you all had? Different from now?

Dark elixir introduced January I think?

Not much different, still tier one troops (no minions of course), but there was no loot penalty so it was far more lucrative.

Once the loot penalty went in, it was giants, wallbreakers, and tier one troops for me. The wall breakers worked differently too. They loosely targeted the closest wall making base design completely different than now. Bases back then had wall spikes jutting out from them as wall breaker deterrents.

I started the day before townhall 10 so I started may 23rd 2012

I started Christmas 2012 so I have been when the waterfall but of course didn't think of taking a pic and I was a noob(like a serious one x 12) The hero update was awesome and christmas special was cool too just dem Santa's Suprises were murderous, they had to buff th and cc hp for dat

Does anyone know what the leaderboards were like this first weeks of this game coming out? Would love to see some screenshots. I joined before leagues so I'm not that new.

Clan castle troops on defense couldn't jump over walls until the Christmas update, so top players would have to leave holes in their bases in order for the troops to actually do something other than stand there.

Did level ever have a purpose in the game? Or was it always just for show I wonder

It was released as Beta in Canada first and I can remember the top clans were all pretty much Canadian by the time it was released to the masses in August. Bonbee Canada, N44 etc.

Only for unlocking certain decorations. They changed the lvl badge to have less importance after the leagues came out and removed it from chat etc. Players were more respected for level rather than trophy range and I think this was an issue for SC.

It's funny to imagine all the CC troops coming out and getting stuck behind walls. It would make luring centralised CC troops an impossibility though!

Started playing in July of 2012 and multi-player was almost unbearable. It would give a "no bases found" error every time you pushed the attack button. Sometimes you had to press the button literally for 10 minutes to find a base. If you logged out for more then a second then you were instantly attacked. Incredibly frustrating to search for what seemed like forever only to have the server glitch out on you and when you logged straight back in your base was wiped out (and all your troops gone)

That must have been a pain to leave gaps open for attackers. Might have been more useful to just not have any openings at all.

Why do the maidens clap?

When the game first came out it was a time of discovery, a few brave players messed around with trophies and discovered sub 200 farming. If you destroyed an army camp, all troops were lost and the player would need to rebuild - this was the best time in game, as it was a golden age, a time before loot caps and loot penalties - meaning you could literally rob a player of all their resources!! That meant there was incentive to build and use all your resources before logging off and if you were able to raid a big player YOU really got to take home the bacon.

Funnily enough even though these hallowed halls were fresh with new paint, the forum was also the busiest as many players were incentivised to learn more about the game - we also had some of the funniest and heated discussions ever held here and a guy called PedroLee became a clash legend with his FARMING 101 post - as it was a completely new concept. He was also the first guy to have a thread hit 50,000 views!

Leave your pumps and mines outside held a totally different meaning - the concept of sharing the wealth was experimented with by a few only.

There was this amazing super mod called Rauta who was firm with everyone and we all whispered his name - we lived in fear of disappointing him as he DID know all the game secrets!! There was only Nick, Gepardix and sneakymaori (he had a name displayed then) as mods. Twister asked and he got granted. The lovely Marika made all the announcements on FB and here but you just know she ran the shop hehe.

In the beginning you could sell walls and get return of gold and of course we lost this as it was most definitely exploited. You could also sell buildings! The village base area was smaller, its had two growth spurts to the current size, but the best thing, giants and dragon images were unchanged and PEKKA RULED!! 7 pekka attack FTW!!

It was the best of times as we eagerly discovered bugs and glitches (queue army/cancel army)

Well I'm kinda new to the clash of clans forums, so any advice would really be appreciated but I think the purpose of this was that its just really cool! It makes you really appreciate the game now compared to then at least for me. I hope you now feel the same as I do. If anyone has anything else they have thats interesting... We would love to see it! ;)

This time periods was kind of a drag. Our clan would sit in glassboard and ask folks to look at our base and take a screenshot and post so we could see the broken walls and damage to the buildings while we were offline to kind of judge where they came in from/what they damaged. The base regenerated a bit too quick to get a good look at where the walls failed, etc. Replays were a huge improvement!

The top 3 patches that had the biggest impact on the game were:

1. Addition of the spell factory

2. Addition of replays

3. Addition of Heroes and Dark Elixir

The loot penalty was a pretty significant patch too but I wasn't a very high TH level when it was added so it didn't personally affect me much.

Edit: Clashing since September 3, 2012.

When I started playing this game, my first impression is it's like an incomplete version of Backyard Monsters. Now it has grown to something way better. Too much bumps along the road but these guys aren't gonna stop perfect this game. Hopefully... :rolleyes:

I wish two things...

1)you can get 100% of everyone's loot

1) you had to remove tomb stones 1 by 1 and as i was a noob, i made a graveyard
2) no replays, even in defence so you couldnt see from where you got attacked
3) no leagues, so we could see levels in chats
4) max TH was TH8
5) no dark troops or heroes
6) lightning spell was really long
7) when your army camps got destroyed, every troop inside got destroyed too
8) PEKKAS and drags took MUCH longer to train
9) tons of other cool things

PEKKAs were looked at as gods and endgame material.

Now they just make a funny noise and get owned by an electrical tower.

true but in silver 2 i could put one down and get 100 % and 30-34 trophies

Pekka training time was 90minutes (not sure but it was more then the 45min now) and spring traps worked on her.

There was an great waterfall in the background :(

The elixir glitch was amazing, it let many players shoot up very fast. You purchased ur troops normally, but then cancelled them. You were rewarded with double your elixir back.

on the down side, if u were raided and your camps were destroyed, you lost all the troops you had made. Best update ever is when they did away with that.

of course i started the day after the elixir glitch was fixed lol...

back then lvl 70's were amazing and worshiped. A guy who had dragons (any lvl of dragons) was regarded as champions are currently. If u had lvl 8 walls u were GOD!!!

I think im most thankful for the army troops fix. Does anyone know if giants and balloons targeted defenses as they do now? That would have been horrible if they didn't. Also was the healer giant combo as popular as it is today?

I remember the exact date i started November 11,2012

I found out about clash of clans was when I was so bored nothing to do I decided to find a game on the appstore i check the
first couple of apps on the top app list and I saw clash of clans been addicted since that day

It was before I started playing, but I remember someone telling me you could sell major buildings for gold.

I got the game about a month after it was released, and then tucked it away for a few months. I only became active after the christmas update. Some of the game mechanics were quite bad (like loosing troops in your army camps if they got destroyed in a raid). I also don't remember there being any hidden teslas at the beginning of the game, oh and no spells. I think those came later. We also had less defense, and less walls. As pointed out previously, there was the nice elixir glitch, the resetting loot in the goblin missions, no loot penalty,you had to tap every tombstone individually, you could sell everything. I found the game much harder at the beginning. Getting that 720k gold for those archer towers seemed almost impossible. Now I rarely have less than 2mil in my storages at all times.

There weren't many experienced players either, players that understood the game properly. You had gemmers, and n00bs. Maxing out a TH level was merely a concept at that stage. I remember rushing blindly to the next TH. I reached TH8 with only 2 builders, and started having a bad time. This was where I got more involved in the game, learned about farming, and eventually ended up maxing that level. Bases were also different back then. Does anyone have screenshots of the first few releases of the game?

Great thead for new players like me, knowing what changes SC implemented to make this game better.

There wasnt dark elixir or dark barracks or dark elixir storages when the game was first created

There was no dark elixir when the game was created

It was a lot different. The map was smaller. Town hall 8 and level 8 walls were max. Level 10 cannons were max. No leaderboards, no leagues. If your army camp was destroyed, the troops in it were lost. The most significant update since is probably the dark elixir update.

Does anyone else besides me think that the spells being made out of elixir is one of the biggest changes in the game? Spells in general have been changed a lot for the best I think

I know the first version of Clash of Clans, it's graphics are ugly and laggy. The spell factory does not say create when empty, it says pray (lol) I don't even like everything in Clash of Clans because it's so laggy and it's graphics are boring and for kid stuff

You used to be able to remove buildings like gold storages and that is why there is a player without any gold storages

I don't always read through 10 pages, but when I do, it's gotta be pretty damn good :rolleyes:

I actually enjoyed the old Clash but i still love the new theme now it keeps getting better and better all the way!
