One Free Wall Upgrade Per Day
Anyone who gets their walls up to levels 6 and 7 knows that wall upgrades cost s LOT of gold. When you look at the costs of level 9 walls, let alone 10 and 11, you get the feeling that you'll never get all that required gold. It's frustrating, and considering the cost, most players will never bother grinding (or paying) for the highest level of walls.
On the other hand, I understand why wall costs are the way they are. Players need a long term goal, something to work through after all of their buildings are maximized. Improving your trophies are nice, but there's still something very satisfying about making a permanent upgrade to your village. "Someone may attack me tonight and I'll lose those 30 trophies I just won, but no one can take away that upgrade." Also, for the elite players out there that buy a lot of gems to fund their wall building, they pay a large portion of the money that goes to Supercell, so we don't want that to go away.
So, a possible solution: One Free Wall Upgrade Per Day.
How it would work: You would have a small countdown timer in your village that counts down from 24 hours (or maybe every 22 or 20 hours so you could do it roughly the same time every day) for the free wall upgrade. Additionally, when you select a single wall unit, a new button pops up next to upgrade called "Free Upgrade." This button is only available when the countdown is at 0, and it grays out when the timer is still running. Clicking it automatically upgrades the wall, requiring no gold nor available builder, and also resets the timer. You cannot upgrade a wall beyond the level allowed by your town hall (e.g.,a Town Hall 8 could not upgrade a level 8 wall with this method, they must first upgrade to town hall 9).
How this would be a good thing:
* It gives players another thing to look forward to when logging in across all town hall levels
* It gives players another way to slowly upgrade to the highest level walls without spending tons of gold or gems, which is very satisfying and a big reason many players play this game
* It would not drastically change the way the game is played, nor the existing timeline of how fast villages upgrade - with over 250 wall segments, it would take 8 months for a player to upgrade their walls just one level. Supercell will more-than-likely be adding new content and new wall levels to the game faster than that.
* It would not drastically change the gold or gem economy - top players would still pay gems to quickly upgrade to the highest level walls
How this could be a bad thing:
* Although the impact to timelines and the gem economy is minimal, it may be a bigger change than Supercell wants
* It could compromise the prestige of level 11 walls when every town hall 10 could have a handful of them in a few weeks.
How this could be tweaked:
* Change the timer to something more or less than 24 hours
* Change it from free to a reduced gold cost (even 50% off once a day would be appealing)
* Change it from free to a small gem cost (1-5 gems) once a day
