When they get it they know nearly all of the loot will be in collectors thus requiring a minimal expenditure of troops to grab it.
The reason people don't simply hit next until they find it is because there is no guarantee you will find it. Thus you settle. A general rule that I tend to follow is I hit next until I find something that yields more than 1k per troop slot. If I think I can grab 50k with a handful of troops, I take it. Failing that, once I feel like my army is likely done training I'll just attack whatever.
Furthermore, if you are not told the cost before choosing to engage, why would you use this feature at all? You're attempting to add a feature which would provide an enormous advantage (at first anyway...until all the targets were gone), and then you seek to erase that advantage. What would you be left with?
After all, when hitting next while searching for a target your army trains so we're not talking about a net gain in time here.
