Decisions, decisions!
Do I hire Tom for a day just to get that puzzle piece? I only have 3 of that type of jam since there was an earlier jam boat that I filled for the event. :p I refuse to flag a jam crate unless I have okayed it ahead of time with a neighbor. This boat would require flagging two since I have other jam queued. Of course, it's not like I'm actually very close to completing a puzzle.

You shouldn't hesitate to flag crates for others to fill (except the 4th requiring a neighbor to fill). There are many people out there willing and eager to help. I can't remember the last time I had to wait more than 15 or 20 minutes for crates to be filled, even the hardest. Most take just a few minutes. No one is required to fill any of the first 3 crates flagged, so no need to hesitate to ask for help. If someone can't help or doesn't want to, they need not help. My thought, for what little it may be worth.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone! I'm glad I didn't send the boat away yet. I'll let you all know what puzzle piece I get. I think I only need 9 more for my second animal.
Yes, flag the crates - just hesitate for the blue one, since that one asks the neighbours and you can ask them yourself first.
The biggest hurdle is getting an advert up that people don't buy immediately. For this I have bought sufficient boxes for the road side shop that the last box is just out of quick sight. Put one wheat for 3 in the last box with advert, and the same in the first box.
The first - visible - sacrificial box sells in seconds (don't clear it out), the one with the advert usually survives. If you clear the sacrificial box the next person looking to buy the advert will find it, otherwise they see the sold item and move on.
This will usually fill boat boxes in just a minute or two.
By the way, if you put green boxes up but no boxes get filled (by you yourself or others), can you still despatch the boat empty?
I help most puzzle boats I come across, even strangers... Flag away!

Mini, your neighbours don't have to fill them - if they choose to, that's their choice. There are plenty of 'outsiders' who will happily fill crates for boat points. I *really* appreciate my GC & Friends Book friends who fill my crates :blush: but I hope they only fill the crates they want to, outsiders will do them for the pleasure or boat points.
My PP boat wants Raspberry Jam & Brown Sugar.

The puzzle piece was #30/35 for the beige giraffe which will be my second animal.
All the posts here have highlighted the fact that we really are a cooperative happy-to-help bunch in spite of the occasional random farmer who takes advantage of our generosity when we help in the DD.
A good tip was to make sure my puzzle piece wasn't obscured. I've had a grove of orange trees (my favorites!) blocking the landing in the past. I got tired of having to move a tree to see whether there was a pp on the wall, so I removed that grove. I also will fill even the "ugly" crates for someone's puzzle boat.
I've also been known to fill crates I wouldn't normally have filled if I was doing a Derby help task, so I guess I can look on having flagged crates and placed an ad in the past as a public service. ;)
Mini, I've just took ( and completed) my last derby task,after working all day,& realising after coming here first that it was puzzle boat day.oh heck !! Panic stations!!!,but I was ok I had all but 2 lemon curds so was able to do it.As I had read your post BEFORE I took my task , I concentrated on helping those with a help request on a puzzle boat, I've filled jam,(lots) butter,, sugar , grilled Tom's,in fact,many items I wouldn't normally put in anyone's crate but my own.By doing this,( don't laugh!!) I figure if I need help on a puzzle boat I won't feel too bad about asking for help.

Farmlevel 106, there is nothing new. So I set myself small targets again and again.
e.g.:
fill 30 crates per day
do all derby task without reservation...
serve 60 townies...
and so on...
