The Minion upgrade gives more bang for you're buck ! BUT it depends how much you use them....and only you can answer that one chap :D
You cannot go wrong with upgrading a BK as you will always use him when available....but as said...if you use Minions regularly you might get more benefit from upgrading those.
Minions if you bam or plan on pushing with ballonians.
Minions all the way. Especially if you need a builder for walls etc, you wont have to use one on Barb king.
I trust you did the right thing and started the Minion upgrade :)
