I personally see lightning as a strategy, but there are two* viable solutions to this problem, one people are going to like more than others I think...
1. Give TH7s a DE drill FOR GODS SAKE!- This is the reason why TH7s lightning DE, they have crappy level 4 troops which aren't going to get into the core of that maxed TH8/TH9/TH10 base of yours, the only way to get the barb king started easily, is by lightning DE storages, or picking off drills from inactives which you don't see every raid. I would say you can only have a level 1 Drill at TH7, no further upgrades till TH8.
2. Another alternative which I think would change up gameplay a bit is to have teslas absorb lightning attacks. Why this will change gameplay? Well people will start centralizing teslas which changes base designs or, putting teslas near the mortar/wizard tower combo. You know how they can both be destroyed for the price of one by lightnings if you put them near each other? Well problem solved by putting a tesla near the mortar/wiz tower. Also, if someone tries to lightning your clan castle troops, if a tesla is in range it will absorb some of the splash. The tesla's location will be showing if it absorbs a lightning spell, and it will not be damaged. This will change many base designs. Also, this will give people incentives to upgrade their teslas. The higher the level, the more it can absorb. The lowest being 10% @LVL 1, the highest being 85% @LVL7
*I just actually thought of this one but what if we could buy bubble shields that we can put on top of buildings? These bubble shields will protect the building from spells. So for example, if someone put a rage spell on a building with a bubble shield on it, the rage spell part covering the bubble shield will be cut. If someone tries to lightning a building with a bubble shield, it will bounce the lightning back on a random part of the base, which can hinder a defender, or help a defender. These bubble shield traps would go away once it has defended against TWO spells. The cost would by ~40-50k gold (protecting buildings ain't cheap) and the max a TH10 could have would be ~4-6.
Thoughts?
Another solution would be to,you know, stop picking on TH7s/TH8s staying in GOLD 3
