Beginner, need help
Hey guys. Do any of you have any tips for beginners like me to this game? I have played other games similar to this one so I have an idea on what to do and not to do but I am still looking for advice to improve. And, I have another question that I have always seen on this forum. What are minions? Looked in my barracks and couldn't find it. I am level 13 atm. All help is greatly appreciated

Minions are troops unlocked at TH(Town Hall)7. At that TH level, you can build something called a dark barracks.
For information on troops, you can find it here.
What TH level are you right now?
So... tips.
1. If you can, buy the rest of the builders. They will be worth it.
2. Don't spend gems on resources.
3. Don't upgrade your TH too early. Wait until you have almost everything upgraded before upgrading your TH.
4. Leave your TH outside. People trying to destroy your TH will give you a free shield.

My Th just got done upgrading to level 4. And I'm not sure if I should spend 10$ to get 4 workers or not. 20$ for the 5 worker in my opinion is just crazy. Thanks for the explanation on the minions though.

So you don't really have to worry about base design right now, maybe when you're a TH7. Just keep your storages and mortar in the middle where no one can get to it, and have several compartments instead of having everything just surrounded by one wall.

Maybe a base like this?

Upgrade the walls around the mortar first, then where three walls meet.

Thanks for the screen shot, but where would the air defense go?

The bottom left corner is fine; you don't really get attacked that much by balloons at that level anyway. If you do, the ATs(archer towers) will take care of it.

Okay, you are VERY lucky you stumbled upon this forum. You will not have to go through the trouble I went through when I messed up my town hall upgrade.
You are Town Hall 4. Correct? Ok. Build everything in the fashion above. Then, when you have all the walls to Level 4 and everything else maxed-out, including your troops (Barracks are not too necessary at this point), move on to TH5. Then, so on for TH6, but this time the Level 6 walls are not crucial. Try to get as many as you can, but the defences are most important before TH7.
Ok, here's where you need to be careful. At TH7, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT upgrade to TH8 before you have these:
At LEAST Level 7 Walls, preferably higher
Completely Maxed Defences
Barbarian King
Dark Elixir Barracks
All the Lab Upgrades such as the Archer, Barbarian, etc (you will understand this once you get here)
Hidden Teslas MUST MAX because they are very powerful when upgraded, plus they take forever at TH8
Maxed army camps
TH7 is a golden farming spot. What does this mean? You can get tons of resources here. You may be asking "Why can't I go to Town Hall 8? There are more defenses and it will go the same rate."
The answer is, that it ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT go at the same rate. There is something called a LOOT PENALTY, meaning that you CANNOT GET AS MUCH GOLD WHEN ATTACKING OTHER BASES. The higher you go, the less loot there is, and the slower the process goes.
If you were as bad off as I was, it takes 8 months to completely max out the TH8. 8 months.
Here's what you can do when farming:
Look for collector raids. These are bases where the players have abandoned their bases and a ton of loot accumulates in their collectors. At TH7, you can raid bases with 300k/300k quite often, and with simple build types like Barbarian/Archer. You're not targeting the storages, only the collectors. Nothing will be in the storages in abandoned bases anyways.
REPEAT EVERYTHING IN TOWN HALL 8 AS WELL!
You should get the hang of things in TH9, but trust me if you stick with it most things will come naturally.
For farming collector raids I suggest 1200-1600 trophy range. Good luck!

Thank you for your help, but I am still trying to copy your base model at the moment. It seems like I'm missing 1 wall at the end and I can't connect it. I made sure that I didn't miss any. Do you know what the problem is?

Hmm... at this point there's no need to make a perfect defence... all you need to do is make sure you get as many things upgraded as possible and move on to the next Town Hall, until you reach TH7 which is where the important shift happens.
EDIT: That wall at the end is called a "spring trap" and it flings your attacker from the battle field, literally instantly kills the troop. You have to replace this every time after a battle though. This is something called "funneling" but is only really useful later.
Do you see at the top between the gold storage and cannon? There's a spring there.
