One more time, if you think proof is possible in this context, YOU provide it. If not, why ask for proof.

I've put up plenty of evidence that its nonrepresentative though. If you don't think its enough, well I hope you don't work for a polling outfit or the FDA.

The way a representative sample works is to have the participants selected as much at random as possible. The number of participants needed to have the sample group be representative of the over all group depends on the number in the over all group as well as how "random" the sample size group truly is. Using the forums here as a representative sample of the over all group faces problems in both respects. First, the number of users here is very small compared to the total number of players. Second, it very clearly isn't a random selection.

That said, it doesn't mean SC should ignore the opinions of the forum users. Very often, the forums are able to provide very useful information that a dozen developers sitting in an office, even if they are playing the game, just can't accomplish on their own. If I was SC, I would remind myself that the forums don't represent the entire playing base, while at the same time I would pay close attention to the opinions expressed here.

Not sure I understand this, but, to be clear, the burden of proof is not on me.

I never made the claim that it was representative, ever. As a matter of fact, I specifically said it was an indicator only.

Tank, however, specifically said it was non-representative. The burden of proof isn't for me to disprove his theory....

And no, your evidence is weak, circumstantial evidence, at best.

Your argument posits that forum posters/readers are automatically outliers and I have yet to see compelling proof that such is accurate. People off the forum can likely be just as biased or objective as those on the forum, especially in regards to what is good for the overall game

Further, no sample is guaranteed to be representative of the entire population, although the risk of non-representative samples is reduced as sample size / total N gets larger, but small(er) sample sizes can still work

The good news is you are both right. It the forums aren't a technically statistically accurate representative sample, but are an indicator that SC would be wise to pay attention to.

I often agree with what you say but Engish only is a major disqualification of the forums representing the majority of players. A little over 20% of the world population speaks English if you include those who speak it as a second language. This reminds me of the "Literary Digest Poll"

Sure, but the percent of people living on planet earth who don't speak english is not comparable to those on planet earth who have electricity, a phone, social networks, and a desire to play a mobile game then calculating which of those people actually can communicate in english.

I'm not sure where you are going with this. Does speaking English have something to to do with have access to electricity or mobile phones?

China and India have a total of more than 2 billion people. Only 10 million or so Chinese speak English and 10% or so of Indians yet these two countries have more mobile phones in use per person than the USA.
