I just alternated. If I wanted more coins, I upgraded to that. Then if I had 10% there, I would get experience points, etc. I didn't think there was a set thing you had to do. So I just alternated.

I find that the only buildings that really need time reduction is the bed and breakfast, diner, and spa. The others I upgraded slots and XP.
first i upgraded to 6 slots in each building.
simultaneously i was maxing out town hall capacity, eggspress capacity, personal train capacity and time reduction.
then it was maxing time reduction on bed and breakfast and spa as they take the longest
then coin upgrade to bed and breakfast and spa, and a few of the others as ug materials allow. currently i'm working on the gift shop.
the buildings that require BEM and SEM in addition to the TEM have received very few of the time or coin upgrades, and will have to wait until i'm more comfortable with the barn (and to lesser extent silo). that may be a while.
For me it was slots, then time reduction and XP/rep (depending on the building, one may seem more important to you), then coin as a last priority.
At first I did a few upgrades towards coin. But, I was reading those that were of higher levels wished they didn't do coins because eventually coins don't become an issue when playing. But, as you upgrade the buildings, they require more materials each time it is upgraded, and since the materials can be difficult to sometimes obtain, it becomes more difficult overtime to upgrade the buildings.
Eventually when I max out xp/rep, I will then focus more on time reduction. Eventually, I will get to coins, but that will be of least priority.
i've read people saying that too.. personally i like shopping in paper, it is part of the way i play and strategy for trucks, townies, etc. i don't even have all the machines i should, and still barely keep an even level on coin lol, i don't necessarily see that changing.
further, you know what else becomes a non-issue at later levels? xp! it's mostly the level 100+ players saying coin is a non-issue, but what's the value in more experience aside from the 12 diamonds every and 1 field every other level to 150? all the new machines, products and crops stop at 100 anyway.
i've still got a few levels to 100, and will probably still be catching up on machines... so for now maxing the coin over xp seems a better investment.
I think the ability to get the extra fields is probably what drives that thought. I know currently, it can be difficult to maintain a certain amount of what is needed to keep production of some items running as efficiently as possible. I am imaging the extra fields fill that void (without having to rely on the DD).
Currently I do rely on the DD for some higher end crops, only because I have to concentrate my crop fields on other crops. If I didn't have to spend full price on strawberries, my profit margins on cloche hats would significantly increase. But, because I need those fields to keep other stuff growing, it is a loss I have to accept at this stage.
So, I guess maybe a balanced approach when considering XP/coin could be better. Slots and time reduction for some buildings though I do think overshadow both xp/coin though.
For the town, I stopped doing coin and experience upgrades because I did not need the coin and the experience points are useless to me because levelling up in town does not lead to new things.
the EMs are of better use on the farm for me.
I adjust my upgrades based on the building.
First, yes I get all 6 slots open.
Next, I upgrade every buildings Rep/XP ONCE! Because even Grocery Store & Gift Shop will give +1 Rep with just 1 level up.
