Has anyone done a "Most profitable item" spreadsheet yet? Broken down by how much profit per minute of production, selling in the roadside stand. Or something of that sort? I cannot find a list on the forum. If not, I will create one here in the next day or so. :)
That'd be a good idea! Another thing to consider is the ease of selling. My gut feeling says it is either bread (when sold in bulk) or cow's milk. Material needed is just wheat and/or corn. Every time I advertise either one in DD, it's gone really fast.
Would love to see the profit by the minute, regardless.

Wow. I'm scanning through the spreadsheet, it seems that the the top 5 most profitable items are Pizza, Baked Potato, Blackberry Muffin, Red Berry Cake and Bread (from most profitable to less profitable). Least profitable items are fruits from the bushes and strawberry.
The spreadsheet is very interesting. I'm wondering whether the time taken to produce something is the only valid criterion? For instance, a blackberry muffin has blackberries which take a long time to harvest, thereby being reflected in the price. In other words, the ingredients in produce all have their own worth and should that somehow be reflected in calculating the profit?
My maths isn't up to this but it is just a thought :)
The most expensive item I´ve come across so far is the tomatoe soup. I sold 10 for 4780 coins, so 478 per bowl.
Diamond rings are the most expensive at my level. They will sell for 705 each.
There is another spreadsheet floating around here somewhere. Mzmflo (sp? sorry) did it after she achieved TT2. It didn't take time into account, as far as I remember, but listed the ingredients needed for each product and looking at that, you could also see which is most profitable (kinda like which uses cheap ingredients but sells at the most once made into the finished product). There are different approaches to figuring out what is most profitable, I think.

I would redo the math on that spreadsheet carefully if you want to use it. There is no way you can earn 45k coins a day making pizza's unless you use a heck of a lot of diamonds on speed ups. (Just as one example and there are more like those)
First of all 45k coins is based on a 60 hour day :rolleyes:. There is no way you can make the amount of pizzas in 24 hours without diamond speed ups to sell 45k coins worth. Second you can't do this non-stop although the pizza only take 12 or 15 minutes (depending on mastery) the cheese for making the pizza still needs at least 51 minutes so unless you have an outside unlimited cheese supply it wouldnt be possible.
Second, its rather tricky to do math like this and compare. Instead of making cheese for pizzas (to stick with that example) you could make cream or butter in the dairy machine and sell those directly and use your bakery to make something else. Selling for example bread and cream or butter seperately will give a player much more of a profit.

I added a profit per hour column (for a non-mastered machine), but like others have pointed out, this figure doesn't take into consideration possible profit of each ingredient needed to make each item or how quickly a particular item will sell. Anyway, hope it helps!

So the profit on any product would be the (max worth of product on RSS - value of raw materials used). And divide this by the time taken.
The key point is, the value of the raw materials will not be the max worth on RSS, but the worth of the most profitable good on that machine that could have been made in the amount of time the raw material used. So it will account for the opportunity cost, so to say.
What do you think? Does it seem like something that would be useful?

The spreadsheet is useful for pointing out, in the absence of other factors, what product for each machine would bring most value add for sale in the RSS. It is also useful in pointing out the few negative value items such as feeds, which I am sure most people would have noticed and zero value items.

A few clarifications on what the Incremental Value Add / min calculation shows:
It is, if you will, a calculation of the value add brought by the labors of each machine. So, if you were to sit by your cake oven and decide which product to make for sale RSS, cream cake production results in value add of 1 coin / minute whereas red-berry cake results in value add of 0.5 coin / minute and potato-feta cake is 0 value add. So you should choose cream cake.
The players labor is not accounted for and is assumed to be infinitely available in this calculation (throughput maximised). So, keeping the machine supplied every 5 mins for bread is considered free and available. If you can only check in every 6 hours and have a short production queue, baking bread, even though it carries the highest value add for the bakery is not going to result in max profits for you. The same for ingredient shortages.
The easiest application of this calculation is to refrain from selling in the RSS items with negative or zero value add such as half the coffees, and the feeds. The second application is to aid in choosing which item to produce for sale in RSS when ingredient supply and player labor is available.
A calculation taking into account the availability of the player and the time to produce ingredients would be possible, but would be an analysis in Operations Research, and would remove all the joy in farming.
