BAM/BAG for TH7???

I've been using giant healer for most of town hall 7. I farm in the 1300-1400 range. A few days ago i switched to using BAG. It stank(stunk?? Stupid strong verbs). I would spend 5 minutes looking and then would lose most if not all of my army for 100k gold. The reward was hardly worth it. I shy away from using minions as I'm a TH7 without a steady DE supply. My barbarians, archers, and goblins are level 4. My minions are level 1.
Here's my question.
What causes my ineffectiveness? Is it my L4 Troops that get oneshotted by mortars, or am I just doing it wrong?
Any feedback is appreciated.

I personally used the Barch army all through TH7, and I still do now. Send the barbs in front as meat shield and archers behind for extra fire. Its a really simple and cheap strategy.

Also, 1300-1400 is a bit high. From my memory, the loot was the best at 1000-1250. Try aiming for collector raids, they give easy 200-300k without you having to use your whole army.

Lastly, only level 4+ mortars will one shot your archers, so keep this in mind when looking for a base to attack.

Yes, it is because your troops are one shotted. Include giants to increase chance of a good raid.

It's the level of your army. Similarly, I tried this strategy and have the same specs as you, it never worked for me like that no matter what I did.

Right now, I'm using a modified Goldstar army as a means of obtaining loot and 50%'ing as much as possible, works better.

x100 Archers
x50 Barbarians
x30 Goblins

This works well with ~20 minute training time. Makes for consistent high yield raids. :) Some higher bases will one-two shot archers, but using the Barbarians as a distraction to keep attention off the Archers usually works well because by the time the barbarians are done, the archers and goblins have destroyed a lot of defenses and collectors and gained back more than what you spent. Lightning/Rage Spells really help, but use them only if necessary. :P Maybe this type of strategy can be tweaked to help with the set up you're trying.

EDIT: Also, you should farm around 1250 trophies, that's the so-called "butter zone" for resource collecting, especially at TH lvl 7 where you probably won't be able to take on Gold League based w/o high resource expensions for Dragons and Dark Elixir Troops.

So what should I do until TH8? Stick with giant healer? I'm going to about the 1250 range.

Just look for collector raids with BAG, honestly. BAM is a superior strategy, as it can destroy storages, but BAG works fine for collectors.

If Giant/Healer is working for you, then do that until you get to TH 8. Don't stop experimenting and looking though, it's always good to do that. :) Youtube is a great way to look at attack strats.

You aren't searching for high enough loot, try and aim for 200k+ collector raids. I wish I could relive TH 7 and try that then.

I've been using the dragon-archer strategy, I use 7 dragons and 40 archers. I look for bases with the air defense toward the outside of the base, use archers to kill the buildings on the outside of the base, then drop my dragons so that way they go for the air defense and let them total the base. The other air defenses are a pain, but dragons have a ton of health in groups so they usually make it until time runs out. I almost always get 100% and always win, I generally look for 125k+ resources, and try to get more elixer than gold so I can pay for the really expensive attack.

With 7 dragons you should be aiming for 200k+ minimum. I manage 200k+ with BAM/BAG as is, usually look for 300k+ when using dragons (it can take a bit, but it's worth it).
