Are you more likely to help a boat on a "strange" farm (ie not a neighbor) if you just bought something really juicy? Do you go to your recent helpers farms to check if they need things (and of course check their items for sale )?
I find I do both.

I find I do both.
I do the same.
I try to if I am able...just did it a few minutes ago, and I've had strangers do the same for me.
Yes I do. I have this policy of not doing sugar/dairy boat because I can barely keep up with my own needs but if the owner of the farm sells something good like bolt/planks/tape and I am the one who buy it, I will reciprocate his / her good deed by helping her even if it's hard.
I don't do it on basis of reciprocity. I like filling crates and see the crates sort of like the mystery box - a small task that someone has put out for my benefit.
I will often go to a farm to fill a crate and forget to check their shop. If I've got no urgent needs at the moment, why buy? OK, I can't resist a bolt, a box of nails or a land deed, but that is the limit of my compulsive shopping unless I need the stuff. I am particularly happy to fill a stranger's crate because I can go back to the neighbor's farm in a few minutes but when the DD refreshes, the way to the stranger's crate is gone so it is a single shot. It's there, you either fill it now or you can't go to it again.
And really, I can't be bothered to "keep score" - this person has nice stuff, the other does not, he/she has never helped me with a crate etc etc. It makes the game a not so happy place - when I realized so much discussion was going on about expected behavior on the forums, it made me a bit weary of shopping or watering people's trees. Some people see marking trees to be watered as a "goody" they expect only their close (reciprocating) neighbors to benefit from for example.
i dont help people from DD anymore, be it reviving trees or filling boats. As those buyers from the DD all have the mentality of "GRAB EVERYTHING DOESNT MATTER IF I NEED OR NOT", having me in their last helper list will only cause my stand to get raided. well, my lost in wheel points and xp from those are just someone else gain and i am okay with that. Peace of mind is more important.
But, it doesn't matter if its something "juicy" like how the OP describe the items, even if its eggs or bacon i bought from the DD, as long as its something i bought, i like their farm instead. Until theres some secret santa gifting ability implemented this is what i will continue to do.
I fill random people's crates from the newspaper all the time, even if I don't buy anything from their shop. If I have the extra to spare then off it goes to a person who needs it rather than taking up space in my barn. The coin and XP is good enough of a thank you, even if it's not directly from the person.
Totally agree with this....What I love most about the game is the helping aspect. I don't expect anything in return....Sometimes I have to step away from reading forum posts, as I find that I start playing the game the way others choose to play it and start second guessing my own game style (Am I greedy? Do I raid? Did I fill a crate that may have been left for someone else?)
I have learned in life in general, that it's best to give gifts as gifts and not expect anything in return, so that's sort of the philosophy I have in games as well.
I try to help friends and neighbors any chance I get! I love doing that! I get it back 10 fold! I visit my neighbors everyday. I hardly use the dd because my neighbors are awesome!
