One box only per upgrade. Free to add Facebook friends to your game and add more boxes to your shop that way :)

to get Box nr 57 I only need 6fb friends or 9 diamonds ,
But obs I got the 56 boxes long before HD change the system for how RC working ,
And a warning OBS many off the Players that wish to be FB friends in HD are everything except pleasant and nice !
Since Game Center friend aspect is now defunct, there are only 2 ways to open up roadside shop boxes that I know of - get more Facebook friends (fairly certain you can open 19 boxes that way but that last box is a ridiculous 500 some-odd new friends...) or use diamonds.
The in-game friend book has no relationship to your roadside boxes.
PS - I added over a thousand friends from Facebook to unlock the boxes for free, and have slowly been deleting them without difficulty to stop shop raiders and such. Deleting them once unlocked does not affect your shop. But does reduce bad behavior that comes with 1000+ random FB friends....
Yep, only for one box.
I have 16 boxes. I don't remember how I got them. I have the option of adding 56 more fb friends or 1 box for 5 diamonds
