Troop Upgrade Tree Linked to Levels

Here is a good idea I had that I think will really help both the players and Supercell.


Idea: Make troops customizable trees, perhaps linked to level.


Why its Good for Players: More customization gives more power to the players. Example: one upgrade for arch might be increased range while the other may be increased attack speed. They would be mutually exclusive. This would give players more incentive to look for the best strategies and explore potential combos. I'm not sure about the exact details the customization would be, but one possible idea may be to give "skill points" at every 5 or 10 levels. Upgrading would NOT require resources OR builder OR time. This will also give more diversity to top level gameplay. Let's be honest, there isn't much creativity. A base gets 3 starred by witches? The attacked person copies that strategy and goes to 3 star other people. Soon, everyone is using witches. It isn't a bad thing to copy success, but its just what happens. This will make it more creative, as the talent allocation WILL NOT be public knowledge. (some upgrades may have visual effects, but it would then be up to the attacked person to do research on the talent allocation). Also gives some meaning to level besides boasting rights.

Why its Good for Supercell: Customizing a troop AT first will be free, but in order to "reset" skill points gems will be needed. I think around 25 gems would be a good cost to reset talent points. (The gem cost could also increase by level). This would not only make money for Supercell from people who change their mind, but also from top players. Top players will no doubt change the talent points depending on the metagame, or perhaps to copy someone else's attack (as talked about in the above paragraph).

tl;dr

Talent points linked to level = $$$ for supercell, More diversity for players

I really like this idea, and I have thought the same thing for Defenses. Being able to customize your defensive structures Damage, Range, Attack speed, and hit-points would add so much more personal customization and strategy to the game.

I would love SuperCell to add this idea of customizing troops (and maybe defenses) but that would be almost a complete overhaul on the game. Might almost be easier to just make a new game.

The lack of such complexity in CoC makes it charming, accessible, and safe.

I feel safe upgrading my troops because there are no negative repercussions. With this new system I might regret giving my archers too little speed or too much HP. Would I have to start again from TH1 if I mess up my Wizard development?

Furthermore, such customization could lead to barbarians being goblins and vice versa. Use all the sprites you want, but a barbarian with high speed and low hp is a goblin. So, perhaps the diversity you seek is already in the game.

Yet, these points don't kill the idea, they are things to work around

I don't think this complexity would be a bad thing. It gives players more power and boosts creativity.

For your point about "messing up" upgrades, I do have to say it is kinda the point but it isn't a bad thing. The upgrades will be mutually exclusive, so if you do pick a skill tree you are stuck with it. Granted, there will be many branches of the tree. This is where supercell comes in however. The gem reset cost will give both a "redo" button for accidents/mind changes and also grant supercell money from gems.

As for your point about diversification, the upgrades would not be game breaking. There won't be "barbarians now target resources" or stuff like that. They would be minor things that would be noticeable but not game-breaking. For example, one upgrade for the barbarian could be "barbarians now retain rage for X seconds once they leave the radius of a rage spell". It would change gameplay slightly, but not creep into the realms of other units. Barbarians will never fly :)

There actually is an example of a customizable defense with a trade-off in game - X-bows (extra range vs. ability to target air). It would be nice to see more examples of it, however.

A barbarian with high speed and low hp is not a goblin. The AI targeting plays a big role in how you deploy troops. You can use barbarians and giants to tank for other troops, but they both have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to interacting with base defenses (i.e. barbarians ignoring a tesla in favor of taking out a builder's hut) and cc troops (giants ignoring cc troops to take out a minor base defense).

You could always design an armory/smithy where you could unlock customization options to switch between (i.e. a shield vs. an extra sword for your barbarians to make them marginally more or less tanky). It doesn't have to be a major change to add flavor.

Actually, any sort of horizontal (as opposed to vertical) differentiation for bases/armies would be appreciated. Just so that the max base for a given th level doesn't always look the identical across the board, bar positioning of the individual pieces.

I feel the same way. I tried playing Ikariam before but the game was so complex and had so many variables that I felt overwhelmed and quit.

Clash is simple, easy to play and you don't have to be a genius to understand the game. Adding stuff like that would make the game way to complex. I'm against it(sadly).

I like it the way it is now, theres no need to fix something that isnt broken

So would you have been against adding spells into the game? Or adding more troops? I don't think this would be a major complication. Players, even young players, are used to getting talent points from levels and allocating them. I feel like this wouldn't take away the simplicity of clash, but merely enhancing creativity.

Idea number one: stop bumping. Please.

Going back to the idea, I think it would be better to do what has benn discussed before. When they get to max level, you can get a number of abilities, like poisoned arrows for archers, or a small splash range for giants. That way, when you get to the stage where you can purchase the abilities, you're experienced enough not to make a bad choice.

That makes sense. However, I feel like levels are a better indicator of "experience" (no pun intended) then town hall levels are. You can rush your th, you can gem your troops. But level doesn't lie. As for the other suggestion, I'm not sure that it should only apply to maxed troops, seeing as a vast majority of players do not have them. Keep the updates for all players, both new and old. :)

What youre describing here is the same as skylanders. Skylanders features an 'upgrade path' that allows you to choose to max out a characters primary melee or ranged attack or the characters secondary attack or special ability. You can also reset the characters back to level 1 if you want to choose a new upgrade path, but lose all gold, which putchases the upgrades.
This idea is a great idea, which is why this worked so well for skylanders; however i think it would make this game way too different than it is now. Maybe a spin-off card game based on upgrade able abilities? I dont know...

Kind of reminds me of My Sims racer where you can upgrade your xp points to speed or handling or weight as well as pick different looks. All lvls offense and defense would have it not just max. Don't think you should have to reset back to lvl 1 to change though, but rather there are max powers and you would upgrade to change allocation so as you add speed you lose strength or range at max lvl. Currently x-bow can be set to ground only with wider range or ground and air at smaller range for example. Maybe start out using this on Heros and L8+ DE troops like witch, golem. Maybe let Valkerie throw her ax and it comes back like a boomerang with various power or distance and speed.

I like it. We will see if supercell will do anything about this. This will bring alot into the game

Each tree would have to have a huge amount of options as the level cap is about 300 so with your idea you would need 30-60 different options in each tree!!

I think that this idea is good if the much u use the unit it will have more talents.
Example: U always use 120 spaces in your attack with archers and the other 120 with barbarians. Then after all your attacks you will won more 120 points to barbarian and archers in the tree linked. When you have a number of points, you will won one ability point on that unit. Then u think where uwill use it.

Now with samurai siege giving bonuses per level, I thought again about how this would be good for clash. Any other feedback? :D
