Not sure how troops would be useless. But because they're life is so low and it takes lots and lots more time to defuse a tesla compared to a single bomb then you need troops to be distracting the defenses from them.
Maybe we can nerf the defuser even more and have it so that one defuser can only defuse one trap or maybe we can have a kamikaze-style trap defuser. Where he sets it off to save his comrades. That would be kind of amusing.
