Question about using diamonds on toolboxes.

I've had this question from a fan on Facebook, so i thought I'd post it here to see what everyone else thinks.

Hi Ricky Love to watch you. But i would like to have your opinion on The fact That I spend diamonds to open boxes sometime to try to get ahead and I get those boosters that are useless either because I have better one or the same. I'm a little frustrated about that. Would very much like to have your view in the matter. Thank you in advance for reading this i know you are crazy busy.

Let me know your views on using diamonds to open tool boxes and the kinds of rewards you are getting. Im gonna discuss this in my live stream so I'm looking for views.

i don't bother using diamonds to open any of them.

It's a long time since I have used diamonds to open a treasure box - I did it a few times when I first started playing over 3 years ago, and soon decided that it wasn't for me (I was f2p then, but I've not changed since I've started buying diamonds).

I agree with your fan's concern about boosters, though. I got one from an unlocked red box the other day. My booster storage was full, and it wasn't a particularly good booster, so I trashed it. Can you imagine the frustration if I had paid diamond to open the box?

I think Boosters shouldn't be placed in Red Boxes, as you can get them easily by other possibilities like level threshold, WOF and as a reward from derby.

I have now run an experiment, out of curiosity, opening five locked boxes:

Five diamonds - great!
Plank - ok
Screw - ok
Coins - meh!
Booster - 2 star crop speeder. Trashed as my booster storage is overfull following collection of horseshoe prizes. It would have cost 6 diamonds to store, for scant benefit.

Experiment ended!

Diamonds, to open unlocked boxes? Mwahhhhhhhh. Errr. No. It's annoying enough to get dynamite when the box is free, I'm not spending diamonds for the ^pleasure^.

Boosters are GOOD in the Boxes. No need for that to change.

The only boosters I get from toolboxes that I don't immediately trash are the "Free Tom for 3 hour"' ones.

I have been spending diamonds to open toolboxes since the permits were introduced. I think I've gotten 4 permits from them so far. I've also happily accepted a few diamonds, planks, panels and a few purple/gold vouchers. Otherwise, as Cowslips says, meh...especially the coins and blue/green vouchers. (For a while, I couldn't figure out why I was accumulating way more mining tools than usual. Duh!)

On the one hand, I'm over the initial frenzy of searching for permits so I don't often use diamonds to open the boxes now. On the other hand, I've started using them and the temptation to keep gambling that this box will be the one with the permit in it is strong.

Never. I never spend diamonds to open a mystery box (or sea chest). Approximately 10% of them open for free, and that's plenty for me!

While the boosters and permits add some fun to the game I don't see any value in gambling diamonds to get them.
I have no problem spending diamonds on Ernest, Tom and even Rose lately.
But I have never seen the value in using diamonds to get who-knows-what prize from a toolbox which I may not even be able to use.

My view on using diamonds to open tool boxes is the same on spending money to buy lottery ticket in real life : it's a gamble, some are lucky, some are not, some appear to control their luck, some fail while trying.

At the end of the day, what I would ask myself: is it worth it for the money/diamond spent ? Is the emotion (happy/sad) when opening the box is what I'm looking for, or only the booster card that I can get by another mean?

You can get axes, saws, dynamite, TNT, green vouchers, and coins as much as you can get a BEM, SEM, more valuable voucher, or permit or booster....the odds are NOT in your favor. Locked boxes are pretty much not useful, ever.

This.

There's a possibility of getting 20+ different outcomes before u get a booster u want or a permit. That's 5%. Not very good odds.

I must've accidentally opened 20+ lock boxes in 4 years of playing. None on purpose. A "WTH" moment every single time. :smirk:

I opened the red boxes using diamonds (except for the occasional free one) until I opened all the permitted land and haven't since. During that time I got a variety of boosters and usually deleted them. On occasion I would get a two star booster that was worth using but not often. The two "prizes" that dominated was gold and TNT. I did get more diamonds than I expected so that was pleasant. I haven't used diamonds since because I was only after the permits. Whatever your after will drop but the odds are against it.

Overall, I would say it is not worth it. Before the permits I never intentionally opened a locked box, but since I have been opening a few with diamonds.

I have had some pretty good luck finding permits, but I have not kept track of the percentages versus costs. I can say that I do not hunt for the boxes and I probably have been opening about 75 percent of the locked boxes I come across in the normal course of play. I have opened 5 deco plots so far, and a handful of permits have been found by other means, but the majority have come from the red boxes.

So, after seeing this thread earlier today, I decided to keep track. I figure I open less than 10 a day, but for today I opened 10. One of those was a sea chest, so I spent 32 diamonds. Here is what I got:

Saw
Blue voucher
Bolt (from the sea chest)
Permit
Green voucher
Tape
3 hour Tom free booster
Coins
Green voucher
Coins

so, overall not worth it, but did net 1 permit, lol. I don't mind gambling a bit though, and since I had a few diamonds left and have not got much to use them on, I decided to give it a shot. I don't do the derby anymore either so have been feeding pets and "cropping", but have literally only seen a couple of permits from those activities. Call me delusional, but the red boxes have seemed to work for me, lol.

If I was to spend Diamonds to 'gamble' for a reward, I'd rather take a couple of extra spins on the Daily Prize Wheel. At least with that you KNOW what the potential outcomes are.

Chests are too random, no one wants coins from them as the amount is immaterial, and you can only hold so many boosters which are the main drawbacks for me.

The wheel is another gamble I've taken since permits were introduced. They've only appeared twice on my wheel, but both times I've used diamonds until I get 2 permits. For me, the diamond expenditure per permit is definitely lower on the wheel than the toolboxes. Neither one is cheap, and I'm only doing it because I had a pile of diamonds I bought a couple of years ago and nothing else has shown up that I want to spend them on.

Another drain on diamonds that has occurred since the advent of permits is the result of my opting back into the Derby. I'm only doing that for the permits, also. The decos I want are scarcer than permits! Definitely not worth Derbying. I get enough "free Tom" boosters to avoid spending diamonds to hire him for boat tasks, but I do spend diamonds to shuffle the awards a couple of times if I don't see permits in 2 columns.

I have no interest in spending diamonds for boosters of any type.
