Why is this so hard
I'm lvl 49 and would like to do some more expansions but can't get spikes! I don't belong to Facebook or a neighbourhood and have no intention of joining. But after trolling the newspaper hour after hour and day after day ....nothing. Not even a spike reward for growing stuff. What's up with that?

Ah yes, that's got to be your rare item. It can be very frustrating, especially without Derby prizes to help you get them. You could try trading through the specific thread, if you would like that.

This is a link to the trading thread. You need to read the first page to see how it works, then skip to the last couple of pages to see what's what.

Every farm has a lower drop of one LEM (land expansion material) so people are always trading them. 'Spikes' (stakes) land deeds & mallets) can be traded 1:1. The ratios are VERY variable right now if you want to trade your BEM (Barn Expansion Materuals) or SEM (Silo Expansion Materials) so I suggest you read back through as many pages as you can and decide what you are prepared to trade to get them.
Good Luck!
Oh. Just to add...I presume you know you need space in your barn or you won't get any drops.

Totally normal. It's deeds for me. And stupid planks and panels. Ugh!
You get used to it, just keep playing, I promise that they will come!

Thanks for your help! Will keep trying and will check out the trading thread.

It looks like your labs are bringing you their idea of a "marker stake"!
Another reason why LEMs are nonexistent in the newspaper is that the last update just added a huge land expansion, so those of us who would ordinarily advertise any LEMs we got as drops are using them...and will be needing to save/trade them for the foreseeable future.
Besides keeping room in the barn for drops, it seems to help if you don't have 25 deeds, 19 mallets and 2 stakes. That's another advantage to trading--you can keep your numbers of materials a bit better balanced which seems to produce more of the drops you want.

I can understand not wanting to join a neighborhood, totally agree, but BECOMING a neighborhood can be a good thing, the derby is not the nightmare posters paint it to be, and I for one am always happy to get the materials rewards each week...

Also...some experienced farmers will add that their opinion is that if your numbers of each particular LEM is off count it even more lessens your chance of getting that rare item. For example: ...Deeds 48, Stakes (spikes)10, Mallets 39 is what I mean by "the count being way off".....make sense? There is nothing wrong with sending a "PM" to someone here that you choose of and ask if THEY are willing to trade one item for another if you want to try it. Not much different that answering a trade request. Just remember whomever is if the higher farm level almost always gets their products first then will get you your items. Some members of a NH may STILL be willing to let go of some LEM's because perhaps they don't mind to expand some land parcels until some future time.... that's my style, or "pace" in which I prefer to farm. Good luck and if you want to try a NH, nothing is final. You simply tap the option to "Leave " that NH at any time.

Stakes (spikes) are my least common expansion item. I do find I have more success getting them if I keep more stakes in my barn than other items.
For example, my normal balance is something roughly like:
30 stakes
20 certificates
10 or less mallets (mallets are my most common item)
Whether selling off any mallets or certificates that bring me too close to catching up to stakes is just me kidding myself, lol, is a matter for debate, but in my opinion I do better with stakes when I have more of them. I do the same with barn and silo.
It's slower than trading.
It's less frustrating than having no system.
:) I am always calm about those stakes now.
