The reasoning behind those posts (not saying they should or shouldn't have been made, only illustrating the point) was more to emphasize the fact that we didn't need the downvote when we had it. Yes, it's possible to put a serious mark on someone's rep if they post a bad thread, but if they do that, they deserve to get that mark. If they only do it once, it will be perfectly easy for them to recover those points with good posting, and after a few weeks, no one will be the wiser (if it made a real dent in the first place). It only really shows if you consistently post garbage. That's the only way you'll see your reputation tank and stay tanked. There may have been more, but I only saw 2 people get hammered with downvotes. One was a troll and basically asking for it, the other posted a troll thread and very quickly apologized upon receiving the downvotes and the thread was deleted. Downvoting did its job.
I like the system.
I think we will see more downvotes if its deployed on mobile. I have no data to back this up, its just a gut feeling. If its not deployed on mobile then it would be an ironically odd system to be in place as we are a forum discussing a mobile game. :smirk:
If the mods decide to not set parameters on what constitutes and upvote or downvote then we will have very little common ground to work from as a forum. In this case I feel the rep system would be deployed as a novelty and not really a forum tool.
I have no problem with the system but in the end everyone is going to have to face the facts that it is a popularity contest to some extent. No matter what guidelines are given people are always going to up vote something that they find funny or just give an up vote because it's a member who they often enjoy seeing in the forum.
The down vote though in my opinion has more value as it will show those posts that most people don't agree with, find offensive/toxic, or don't appreciate the poster's overall attitude. Moderators can't be expected to jump in every time someone gets a down vote and have their feelings hurt either. There is more for them to do than constantly reviewing down votes...
Edit... If you don't agree that's ok.. but please do not come back and down vote me if that option is ever put back into the forum.. lol
I used to subscribe to that, but now I'm not so sure. The point of the rep system is for people to support what they want to see and show what they don't want to see. People are perfectly fine to downvote based on a disagreement. As a recipient of a downvote like that, it tells me that particular person wants the forums to be an echo chamber, not a place of discussion. I wouldn't use it that way because that's not what I want to see. I am far more likely to upvote someone I respectfully disagree with that someone who agrees with me but presents it poorly.
The rep system is subjective and allows us to mold the forums to our taste. If we had guidelines on what should and shouldn't be up and down voted, it would be molding the forums to the moderators liking. That isn't necessary because the mods do that on their own when it's necessary anyway, they don't need a rep system for it
Respectfully disagree. While you and I may disagree on a subject and decide to down vote each other I don't see that as an issue as it will be limited to the number of votes. But when someone comes on the forum and says the game died the day that SC took town hall snipes away and gets a bunch of down votes that would be the best use of the down vote in my opinion. If that's what you consider an echo chamber then count me in now, now, now, now, nowwww....
BTW... I don't think that was what you meant. But just trying to show another side of your comment.
Fair. Question though...Is your motivation for downvoting that person because you think their opinion is wrong and/or that you disagree? Or is it that the poster is dragging in a long since beaten horse and creating a discussion that will never go anywhere positive?
When I say "downvote for disagreement" I mean it in the most literal sense. I downvoted you because I think engineering is cheating and you don't. No other reason. That, to me, is what creates an echo chamber. Not suppressing notoriously toxic topics like asking for town hall sniping to return
Ah. Preempted me with your edit, haha. Still worth saying though
Absolutely useless unless it's mobile and then I question its value. There is so much opinion posted here and that's a good thing. If I'm worried about reputation and being down voted just because someone disagrees you begin to stifle the openness of the forum.
Yes that's an argument that's already been stated but it's worth saying again.
