I have more than enough gold to upgrade my town hall at the moment, but I want to upgrade my Barb King to level 5. Should I farm for dark elixir or just upgrade my Th and get it done at TH8 with better troops?

Go TH8. DE is easier to come by at TH8 than it is at TH7, so there's no point staying TH7 if the only goal is the BK.
Start TH8 if you're almost finished with walls. Its takes 8 days so that's plenty of time to get the last upgrades of 7 done.
I am a half day away from TH8. While upgrading, I've upgraded to bk4 and started hog research 4 days ago. My gold storages have been maxed for days now and I resorted to buying decorations. Can't cook spells fast enough. I didn't have a builder free to go bk5, so I started hog research which takes 8 days. That's gonna delay my archer upgrade by 4 days which kinda sucks. They should really reduce hog research time, level 2 is too weak to warrant 8 days.
I'm completely maxed for TH 7. Even my Lab is maxed with the exception of the Hog Riders.
so I guess I am going to go to TH 8 then. Thanks for the input so far.
Sounds like you have maxed basically everything other then king. So yeah, upgrade to hall 8.
