How about keep calm and clash on?
Or you could look at it as its someone behind a computer monitor or iphone screen so therefor they can do no physical harm to you and if your not mentally capable of withstanding someone simply typing something on a forum then your not gonna be mentally capable of life...
Arguements, disagreements and differences of opinions are a fact of life and should not be discouraged or banned.
We already have to tiptoe around on this forum, I for one would resent a fluffy forum that was too nice.
When I joined this forum, I joined another at the same time as a console game was just released in April. One MASSIVE difference I have noticed is that within the supercell forums, people are genuinely more sarcastic and in some cases, not as helpful at all. It's not really a good impression to give the new members, who may have never visited a forum before and have no idea what to do. It seems most people would like to mock more than they would like to give advice.
On the other said forum, it is based around quite a complex game. A 1v1 fighting game, yet whenever there's a new thread which has appeared many times, the community are extremely helpful and link other threads and/or give a description of what they want to know sourced from other threads. I literally find it hard to remember a time someone was rude or were mocking somebody for their lack of knowledge. And here's the weird part, there's very little moderation. People are allowed to swear and post pretty much what they like around the subject, and it's strange seeing the difference between players as the age variation is higher on the other forum.
I don't know why this happens, but I just wanted to add to this thread. If you joined a forum and were mocked or insulted continuously, would you want to stay? I fully agree with your post. After a while of joining both, I went inactive on this one, simply because I was sick of seeing different posts answered with what seemed like a chain reaction of negativity. If one person gets away with it, why not them all? Hmm.
But in life, people rarely go around insulting others, bossing them around at whim and try to make the life miserable of others. While here on the forums, that is what some prefer to do. Sure, it's all just some words on a forum, but some take it all more serious than others.
I don't think anyone has been banned for arguing or disagreeing. Insulting, mocking and flaming, yes. See, I am disagreeing with you and I'm not banned... Yet, at least
I think that's one of those million dollar questions why that is the case. I think one aspect of it could be the vastly different and widely spread playerbase. On console gaming you got, compared to iOS gaming, quite narrow playerbase. Add to that the selection of the game, what ever it may be, limiting the spread even further. But on iOS game such as CoC, you got everything between 5yr old girl to 75yr old retired grumpy old man. Put that mix in one place (the forum) and you got a volatile mix of personalities :) Then you add a bunch of rebelling teenagers, who have been bossed around their whole life, to a seemingly free place to do and say what they want...
But maybe I'm totally off the mark and it's actually all just from a single place, the monastery of the hidden troll, a bunch of monks who all got iPads for St. Shrek's day gift. Never know, never know...
Guys, need to keep on topic please:
Are you in favour of moderating/enforcing - do you want lighter or stricter modding?
This is a good thread which has had some very healthy debate and interesting points of view, we don't want to have to close it because it descends into a flame war.
Cheers and goodnight!
I think the jury is still out on this and I doubt there will be an unanimous verdict on the topic.
Not lighter, heavier, stricter or any such. Different altogether. Enforcing ought to be avoided as much as possible and that should be the last resort. Appeasing the heated situations, help and assist people in their hour of need. That is of course not just the mod's responsibily, but for all forumers something to thrive for. But that's just my point of view.
For example now the wording of the post indicates, that one option to handle a heated (which I'm not seeing) discussion would be to close the thread. From the actions of few, a whole thread has to be sacrificed? And as the forum rules state, that re-opening a thread is against the rules, all possible future points would not be heard and ideas exhanged. I find it sad, that discussions, even heated ones, are closed. In my view, that's what moderating is all about: tackle the possible situation without trampling on the flowerbed :)
Members breaking the rules when they post is not always a problem we have to act on - often it's accidental or maybe a momentary lapse that a quiet pm would sort out.
But the highly personal and aggressive posts that @@ very rarely @@ but sometimes appear on this forum have to be moderated. Trust me the last thing we want to do is take down good threads because of a few bad posts. An extreme example of this is what we had to do on the farming competition thread - a very important thread that was sidetracked by an argument (let's not go back there!). You remember I had to close that three times and we stripped out dozens of offending posts, if not more.
The bottom line is everyone knows the rules, we try to apply them fairly but what we say online is public and the law is the law, if the police were investigating a harassment case for example and lawfully requested logs from this forum it would have to be provided.
I would LOVE not to have to do anything - no moving threads, no dealing with spam, no sorting out arguments, and just focus on helping fellow forum people as best as I can...this is what we should all move towards in my opinion.
Help us mods not to have to do any moderating and I think it would be a much happier place.
Aye, that's what I've been trying to steer towards right from the start.
Tricky? Yes.
Doable? Yes.
All I can do is give some guidance as I can't spend that much time here anymore. So my personal direct involvement on such heated situation appeasings will be rare, but I think there are some others, who have the time and hopefully with the help of this discussion thread, also some ideas how to help :)
