I've never put up tofu dogs or cloche hats or other various excessive non-essentials in my market, so I haven't ever paid attention when something has gotten bought by Greg or Tom. Now I'd like to start putting some of these in my market from time to time, but do I need to place an ad on them in order for Greg or Tom to buy them? Or can they just sit in my market slot quietly? Thank you! :)
I do not know the exact timing of when Greg or Tom will buy goods in your stand, but it seems to be after the item has been there for a couple of days. There are times when some players want to purchase these items (visitor events), so you can advertise. However, I don't think that makes a difference as to when Greg or Tom will purchase them.
If I have an over abundance of tofu dogs or red cloche hats I put them for sale towards the end of my stand. That way I don't need to see them every time I go there.
I frequently leave some tofu dogs and/or cloche hats unadvertised on my stall, and one box is usually bought by one of "the boys" within around 24 hours.
I was intrigued to know what would happen if I didn't collect the coin straight after Greg had bought, so I left it on the stall. Tom bought the other items the following day. It's a nice little earner, and a great way of getting rid of excess wool.
Be warned, though. I have found that if I have other stuff on my stall, Tom or Greg tend to buy that in preference to cloche hats or tofu dogs, so they can linger for a while when that happens.
I'm confused by this too as I've had either Tom or Greg buy something from my RSS that I forgot to advertise and that was just left there for a few hours, no more than 12. So no, no advertising was needed in that case. On the other hand, I have friends who don't seem to be playing at the moment and have had tofu dogs and similar items sitting in their shops for weeks that haven't been bought.
One friend has had green tea up for at least 2 weeks now, which was likely never advertised as I'm sure it would have sold. Do Tom and Greg only buy certain common items?
Thank you for the replies! Good to know I don't need to put an ad on tofu dogs and such. That is a good question that CottonTail asked also. I have had those two buy some wool from me before. Does anyone know if it's only quite common items that they'll buy from your market? Thanks again all!

Tom and Greg regularly stop by unannounced a poach my precious cheese and fish! So no, you don't need an ad for them to show up.
I used to think that products would have to sit for a long time before Greg would find them, but they have bought products within the first hour before. Not often, but it happens.
I get a sense that they prefer to buy from the first slot with something in it. Or maybe it's the slot that's been occupied the longest? I frequently fill from left to right, so those two criteria are usually the same for me. On my feeder farm I'll often put wheat up in the first slot before filling the others. That works pretty will: if they buy it will usually be that wheat and cheese and fish are safe. I wish I could tell you that this works all the time, but I just don't remember.
I also use that to my advantage in my main farm. For example, when I was working on mastering the hot-dog machine I would make a lot of tofu dogs and need to get rid of them. I would always put those in the first slot, and it seemed that Tom & Greg would buy those. Note that this may well be a load of hooey: tofu dogs are not a high demand item, they'll sit there forever, so if Tom & Greg have no preference for what to buy it still stands to reason that they'll buy the tofu dogs more frequently. Regardless, I stick with this silly superstition, because as they say on TV "It's only weird if it doesn't work" :)
Thank you XYZZY! I've always enjoyed reading your posts. :blush: I do remember now that those two guys do seem to prefer the first two slots. Although I am in no hurry to master my hot dog or hat machines, that is where I'll be placing my extras now for the two special visitors.

- I haven't set timer on when they come, no comment on that
